[Update: Tried it w/H80] MSI GTX 560 (TFII/OC) water cooling? [GPU Pics Inside]

Thread Starter
Lately, I've been really wanting to water cool my system, primarily the GPU and CPU (water cooling RAM just seems stupid). I want the whole thing, complete with tubing, a pump, etc, but all that stuff I can probably work out on my own.

The GPU has been my problem. From my understanding, my video card does not have a reference PCB (see all 4 images below).

With that being said, I should still be able to use a universal GPU water block, right? I don't need to cool anything else on the card, since the only thing that the current heatsink/cooler cools is the GPU itself.

Any good product recommendations? I'd like to keep the budget as low as possible while still having good stuff to keep the GPU cooler than now, so that I can do some overclocking in the future.

See post #5 for my results using an H80.

U kidding? Get the Antec 620 and use that. It's nuts how cool it will run.

$50...can't beat that!

Btw My Asus DCII 560 is idling 1C above ambient (22C) and load doesn't go past 45C with the 620 on the die.

OR, would I be better off getting something like an H70 and modding that onto the GPU? Seems to provide nice results.

Oh dang... Was never aware of the 620 until now.

Anyhow, I just bought a Corsair H80 from CompUSA. Will see how everything goes. Will probably return it and get a 620 since it's basically half the price.

Note: Load tests were done with a 15-minute FurMark burn-in test.

Stock HSF
Idle: 31C
Load: 86C

H80
idle: 31C
Load: 64C

I think that the large water block could've been better applied to the GPU. Maybe a smaller water block would've been more "compatible" with the zip-ties. It's still an improvement. I went ahead and reverted everything and will be returning the H80. Wasn't planning on really keeping it anyway. Was just curious as to how it'd perform on my video card.

For a more detailed look (plus photos and a summary video) at what I did, go here: http://thetecherra.com/2012/02/04/using-a-corsair-h80-on-an-msi-gtx-560-video-card-video/

That is interesting, you should have been getting lower temps. I know on my setup (GTX480 SLI) I was getting a little over 50c @ 900 OC in furmark.

I'll probably need a new case if I ever do this again. Had to [temporarily] put the radiator on the bottom of my case. Way too much hot air was coming from it. The top and back of the case wouldn't work since my motherboard heatsinks wouldn't let me mount it properly.

Not with an H80, but with the Antec 620. However I also lapped my cooler heads and removed the IHS. http://www.overclock.net/t/1173936/gtx-480-sli-ihs-mod/0_50

The video was very well done and unlike most crap on utube I was not aggravated listening to the poster, thumb.gif

Just a few things I seen that should be mentioned in regards to the temps. The Mod was originally about reduced sound created by the gpu fans firstly, second to that is low temps. You did not convay this in your video. IF you recive reduced temps (which you probabley will) its a bonus but should not be the main goal to this mod. The difference in sound with the before and after was very apparent, too bad that this main point was not mentioned.

During the video and at the point you conncet the pump to the card is very evident that the pump is sliding all over the place and without question smearing the TIM which will most certainly affect your temps both low and high. During completing the mod, the point that the card and pump are attached is the most important part, this is where the most care needs to be taken. Great care most be taken that the two DO NOT SLIDE. If they slide you will need to reapply the paste, you need to keep the two perfectly in place untill tightened. I have done this mod a dozen times and every time the pump has slid on the IHS i have seen temps issues afterwards.

You have done a fantastic job with the video and i would love to see you do another that could be included in the guide as a video torturial to compliment the written guide. If you were to consiter doing another video could you contact/pm rage1942 or myself to colaborate to produce the best video guide possable, youve got some skills with that camara and you have a most excelent voice doing videos. I know i most certainly enjoyed listening to you during it.

The great thing about a forum such as OCN is that there are many enthusiastic individuals who when coming together are better able do produce a great end product that would most certainly be better than what any one individual could produce themselfs.

I agree with cravinmild. The main purpose for the mod was to eliminate the jet engine noise with the dual 480's I have. Now have have a near silent PC with awesome temps! thumb.gif
