You're looking at just about twice the FPS, I'd suggest though getting something like a 460 or if you can squeeze in the 560, both are significantly better cards, the 460 can be had for just about the same price, the 560 being a few $$ more.

as far as is it worth it? Again, your doubling your frames, most likely more in many games, using significantly less power, and producing less heat. IMO its a win

not even close to double a GTS450 is about 5% faster than a GTS250 which is 3-5% faster than a GTS 512, now a GTX 550 is about 7-10% faster than a GTS450 so 20% faster to 25% faster than a GTS512

I noticed a HUGE difference over my 8800gt to a 4870 if that helps.

I would not recommend a GT550 Ti for your situation because its rendering strength will likely not be fully utilized at your (relatively low) resolution of 1440x900 and with your dual core dual thread C2D E8400.

I would suggest a GTS450 or a GTX260 and then save up differential money,  to prepare either for a long term complete system overhaul or a short term CPU upgrade from the C2D E8400 to a C2Q Q6600 (which is highly overclockable).

I would say a GTX 560 or 6790
Get a 5770/6770 or a old 4870 or 4890. The 4890's overclock pretty well and can be had for around 80 bucks used and its faster then a 6770.
You can get a used gtx460 1gb(make sure its the 1gb) for around 120 as well. I would pass on the 550ti Get a gtx460 or 5770.
