You can get a used gtx460 1gb(make sure its the 1gb) for around 120 as well. I would pass on the 550ti Get a gtx460 or 5770.

+1 REP 6770 1GB RAN BF3 FINE AT 1024

Oh ya a 460 with at least 1 gig mem or a 560 will blow your mind compared to the 8800

I upgraded from a GeForce 8800 GT OC to a GeForce GTX 560 Ti. This was originally on my Core 2 Duo E8600 @4GHz, and it was fine. The CPU/platform will be what you want to upgrade next for sure, but do not worry about it holding an upgrade back, because that point is sort of void because anything that CPU is going to bottleneck is going to do so with that GeForce 8800 GTS anyway. I'm not saying to pair a GeForce GTX 580 or Radeon 7970 with it and play Battlefield 3 or anything, obviously, but I hope you understand.

I'd go with something like this.

A GeForce GTX 550 Ti is probably roughly GeForce GTX 260, Radeon 4870, and/or Radeon 5770 type performance, plus or minus, and depending?

its between the 260 and 275 in preformance, just a bit faster than a 5770

I would go for the 560ti. price to performance is amazing. IF you do decide to go to 1920x1080 in the future you will be covered. at 1080p you can play bf3 on ultra with no AA on that card (you could have 4x AA on more enclosed maps and be able to run it smoothly), it can pretty much run anything. Just my 2 cents

Plus they're amazing folders if you do that
