It really all depends on what you are looking for from the sound card. Gaming, music, headphones, what type of speakers, 5.1, 7.1, etc.

Here are two Asus cards, they are the same except for PCI or PCI-E x1.. whichever suits your needs.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829132007

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829132006

They are $65 after MIR. Or if your budget does not include rebates I'd go with one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Xonar-Channels-Interface-Sound/dp/B002VAD716

Newegg is out of stock, but Amazon has them ^ $41 after MIR.

From my experience, seems like creative may be a little more tuned towards gaming whereas the asus ones are more for media.

Take this with a grain of salt because I'm generalizing.

Creative X-Fi Sounds cards have better Audio positioning in games. Only issue I see is the fact that the cheapest new Creative sound card (Regular X-Fi Titanium) is still over your budget.

If you have monitors try to get a Used Titanium HD. They are about $80. If you've got a 2.1 Setup, go with the Xonar DX.

I see people making that claim all of the time and don't see how. In stereo the positioning is exactly the same and I've never seen any proof otherwise. The main difference is that the Xonar cards use dolby headphone while the creative cards use cmss-3d and/or thx tru-studio. Its all personal preference. I just picked up a Xonar dx and for single player immersive gaming I really like dolby headphone. Audio transitions are very smooth and positioning seems very natural at least in the games that I've tried so far. This only really applies to headphones which is why I asked what the op is going to be using in my first post.

Other than that the creative cards have working eax support. I can't think of a single game that I've played with the xonar where eax worked properly but I'm not even sure that I play more than one or two eax supported titles a year.

There are four or five WTB threads for a Titanium HD at $80 on the first page or two of the audio classifieds here. Finding one at $80 is going to be easier said than done. I may list my titanium hd and if I do its not going to be at $80.

The Titanium HD is a stereo card with support for DD and DTS encoding thru digital, so if he was to have a stereo setup. For $80's it would be the better choice then the DX for the same usages.
