The next Xbox will not launch in 2012, Microsoft has gone on the record to say.
Cedrick Delmas, marketing director of Microsoft France, was asked by Lepoint.fr in a new interview (translated by Eurogamer's Oli Welsh): "Rumours indicate the presentation of a new Microsoft machine at E3 in June..."

Sounds like fail to me. I'm guessing the one with the Radeon HD 6670 will be the higher end SKU while the lower end one could be some ARM powered box. I don't expect Microsoft to go all out in terms of using the highest end hardware in their boxes.

mod edit: Please make the title of the thread exactly the same as the article...

user edit: I only need to highlight a certain part of the article. The beginning and title or not of particular interest to me.

well, im pretty sure the graphics power will stay the same, maybe just some features will be different like storage.

btw, the new xbox's better have regular HDD storage instead of the proprietary firmware WD drives. I am not paying $150 for a 500gb Caviar Blue that has special firmware when i can use my $90 1TB WD black.

at least make the firmware easy to crack so i can flash my own HDD's instead of paying for overpriced slow ones

It'll take special hard drives most likely, also the 500GB would probably be $200 not 150 biggrin.gif

What would be nice to see is a decent quad cpu, with a swappable graphics card. They could put out a new card every 2 years and keep the console up to date on the most important piece of hardware in the system.

That would complicate things for the user and the developers.

terrible idea. The last thing they want is 11 year old MW4 twerps trying to monkey with the internals of their xboxs, or crying because their 3-gpu-outdated xbox720 looks bad compared to a ps3 because they don't understand gpu upgrades.

If your into modding you can use a normal harddrive. I haven't tried it myself since i got a 120gb hdd with my elite so i don't know much about it but just google it. smile.gif

lol i know, i made the guide on how to do it on the xbox section here at OCN tongue.gif

but i think MS will catch on and make the next gen HDD much harder to crack, thats the worry

Ideally yes they would go for something like that but then again this IS Microsoft. They've been known to disappoint and they probably would with this.
When the Xbox 360 came out in 2005 it had a GPU very similar to an X1800/1850 which was ATi's flagship card released in October of 2005: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenos_(graphics_chip)

Really I would have to wait and see if they decide to get graphics that are better than just marginally better than the Wii U's.

Depending on what kind of game you're playing the Radeon 6670 could be good enough though it would probably run around 30fps rather than 60 fps. Games like Bastion for me oddly enough run smoother on my first gen. Intel HD graphics than on my Radeon 5570 at 1680x1050. If games for the lower end sku don't have many textures then it then the 6670 should be good enough.

Consoles will most likely never go with a multi-GPU setup simply because that is wasteful on power (RRoD), money (because the extra silicon), and processing power. Multi-GPU setups can be tricky for developers to work with since both GPU's have to work in sync. A single GPU and CPU would keep things simpler for developers to work with.

As for hard drives, I would imagine that they would stick to their current scheme if not make it worse by advertising drives rated for different speeds in addition to storage.

It would be interesting to see a console have expandable memory or graphics. The N64 had it's expansion pak but that was because it needed it from the start. Console manufacturers wouldn't make a system like that since that would essentially make it a PC without Windows. Consoles exist because they are easier to develop for since they only come with one hardware config and not infinitely many and because average consumers find them even easier to work with. A lot of gamers I know just want a system where they can pop their game in the disk tray and get right into it without bothering with other features. The last thing they would want to deal with is upgrading their hardware. The majority of people are scared of just the thought of opening up their computer, not to mention console. To them they would much rather buy a new system than to upgrade it.

In related news the idea of games that can't be resold is going around and has been seen on some 3DS games. It's possible this might end up on the next Xbox with games like these being the standard for the system. We could see more downloadable mainstream titles (since that defeats the ability to buy a used game) or just some new technology on every disc that makes budget conscious gamers cringe and even consider turning to piracy.
