but i think MS will catch on and make the next gen HDD much harder to crack, thats the worry

Or maybe they'll stick to their lazy selves and keep it the way it currently is.
Microsoft's plan is simply to charge reasonably for the console but everything else (including Xbox Live) is severely overpriced.

Why is it every thread on next gen machines has someone wishing consoles would become PC's?

Now, we all know thats not gonna happen.
Current desktop PCs have a hard time pushing 60fps at 1080p.

Optimization. It is all about optimization. If they're designing a game, and optimizing it to run on a SINGLE set of hardware, they can make it accomplish A LOT more.

The 6670 is just a misinformed rumor.

Dual-GPUs was a misinformed rumor

Microsoft announcing Xbox 720 at CES, misinformation

Microsoft launching a new console in 2012, misinformation

Early 720 dev kits, misinformation.

Xbox 720 6x the Xbox 360, misinformation

It makes no sense to have two different boxes with two different capabilities because developers are forced to compensate by targeting the LCD which would be the 6670. The 360 shipped with non-standard harddrives and that relatively insignificant hardware difference made developing games more of a chore; they weren't able to use the HDD as a cache because not every gamer had one. Now imagine how difficult development would be if there were two SKUs with non-standard core hardware. It makes no sense on any level.

The underlying reason why these rumors are misinformed is because the 6670 is nowhere near 6x Xenos when you account for overall throughput and bandwidth. Considering those metrics, its only 3x as powerful as Xenos and, assuming Microsoft will continue to use the same TDP as the original Xenon 360, the 6670 would prove too weak anyway, especially for a console that will last 8 years.

My first assumption would be HDD, 500/750GB and 16/32GB Flash. That would be the common sense possibility.

For my "non-common sense" possibility, a variation on the different strength hardware:

Isn't the 720 also rumored to be using a AMD APU?

...What if the APU is different?

Say Msoft uses a 6670 in each [which is a sad development], but the cheap 720 uses a A6-3600 [GPU 320sp @ 443] and the top line uses the A8-3800 [GPU 400sp @ 600MHz], maybe another 1/2 gig of memory to boot. Microsoft can then require all to run on the lower priced model, but permit developers to add additional effects [Physics, FXAA, post processing effects, whatever] as they wish.

...of course, if the anti-used games is reality I wouldn't care if it had a Ivy Bridge quad and GTX 690.

eh, this is Microsoft. They only go as far as what you need. 500GB HDD's should be expected since the only thing you can do with them is install games on them. It's not like local storage on a PC where you can store whatever you want on them. Microsoft doesn't allow that.

The APU based xbox never really gained much support, even though no one really knows what kind of CPU would be in the next xbox. It's possible though it's more likely they would go with another PowerPC based CPU. As far as APU's currently go, they aren't that powerful CPU-wise. A low end Intel Core i3 would easily beat them.

A few years ago this news probably would have has me frothing at the mouth...

But that was before I built a gaming rig and was strictly a console gamer

Now my PS3 hasnt been used for gaming in almost 6 months it's now strictly for blue rays
