2nd 6850, or single 6950 2gb?

Thread Starter
So doing some more upgrades. Getting an hx650 to replace my current psu. Then also doing a video card update.

So a 2nd 6850
Or sell my current one and get a 2gb 6950?

Probably a second 6850 unless you plan on multiple monitors or getting a second 6950 in the future.

What games and resolution do you play?
If your playing with 1 monitor and 1080 or less then a 2nd 6850 will be the best choice since it will give you more power then a single 6950 by quite a bit.

The only down thing will be youll start hitting vram limits if you have more then 1 screen or higher resolution. (unless you have have 2GB versions of the 6850.)

I would suggest another HD6850 for crossfiring because:-

1)  At 1920x1080, HD6850 CF is about 41% faster than a single HD6950 2GB for an average of 16 games tested. The 2GB does not come into play very much, except in a few games like BF3 in Ultra Multi Player mode. So, on a broad sense, I would rather have the rendering power of the dual GPUs over the abundance of VRAM. Micro-stuttering does exist but, IMHO, it is overexagerrated. Unless you are very very sensitive to it, do not worry about it.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ATI/Radeon_HD_6850_CrossFire/23.html

(showing that HD6870 CF is about 1% faster than a HD5970)

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/HIS/Radeon_HD_6950/29.html

(showing a HD5970 is about 40% faster than a single HD6950 2GB)

2)  2GB becomes very relevant if you plan on Eyefinity in the near future. But then, you will need two HD6950 2GB in order to drive Eyefinity resolution comfortably.

3)  Motherboard consideration: ASUS M4A79XTD EVO has an empty slot space between the 2 crossfired cards (in dark blue and white slots). So, cards' ventilation is not a big problem.

4)  Case consideration: Antec 900 has a side panel fan which is handy to provide additional air to the cards when and if needed

5)  PSU consideration: Corsair HX650 has four PCI-E connectors for the 2 cards in crossfire. No problem here.

Yeah I've heard of micro stutter but no clue what it is really.
What all do I need to do for x fire? This will be my first time doing it.
I know I need the cross fire bridge but do I need to do anything specific software
Wise?

I really don't know the answer to that but I think all you need is the crossfire bridge and the drivers (maybe ccc)

And I've been driving eyefinity with one 6950 (unlocked and overclocked) with no problems. 40-60 fps in skyrim on ultra. Other games probably won't work so well though.

Everything youll need will come with the 2nd card.
Then you just plug them in, Do a driver sweep and re-install drivers with 12.1 the make sure cross fire is enabled in catylist.
