HD 6670 vs GTS 250

Hello Guys,

I'm planning to swap the videocard in my brother's rig, HIS HD 6670, with an older GTS 250 (spare vcard). I know it's a bit old and it drags more power but I'm just wondering which of this one is faster.

The prime use for his rig is:

- MMO (world of tanks specifically)
- Plays Skyrim (sometimes)
- He doesn't really use DirectX11 imho
- Browsing

His rig's specs:
CPU = Pentium G620
Mobo = Asrock H61M-S
RAM = 1x4gb Transcend DDR3
Vcard = HIS HD6670 1gb
Power = Antec Neo ECO 400 watts

So, would it be a good idea to swap it with a GTS 250? Well, for better FPS when playing an MMO..

The GTS250 is a 8800GTX so it flogs the 6670.

Double the pixel fill rate, more than double the pixel fill rate and double the ROP's

Keep in mind 55nm v 40nm, the 6670 will be cooler and more power efficient. But at this performance level it means squat.

no point of staying in geforce 2 series....get gtx 550ti since it supports dx 11 and keep in mind that upcomming games would rely on dx 11 so it's better to stick to dx 11 card and windows 7 also has dx 11 not dx 10....

overall for best results get a radeon like hd 6770 rather than going for nvidia for reasons:
1. Geforce is expensive than radeon.
2. Radeon cards produce less power than equivalent nvidia card...

and many more...

The GTX550Ti is not a good buy.

Secondly, at this performance range the power consumption is only a slight advantage to AMD, and Nvidia cards tend to have different price points to AMD cards.

A 6770 is heavily made redundant due to the 6790 being a great jump, and the fact it seems this guy is on a stretch so a new card wouldn't be wise.

Thank you for the input guys.

Although getting the new Geforce 550Ti would be a good option, I'm not planning on buying anything for now. The Geforce GTS 250 I have is a spare vcard from one of my old rigs, I just want to increase FPS experience for my brother's rig while he plays MMOs. He's not really into the newer games except for Skyrim, which he plays on some occasion (where internet is bad).

So, it is wiser to say that putting my old GTS 250 into his rig would greatly improve his gameplay performance, right? thanks. smile.gif

the gts250's performance is somewhere between the 6670 and 6770.

HD6670 < GTS 250 < GTS450 < HD6770/HD5770

He might gain 5-10 fps in skyrim but its not worth the trouble of swapping the cards.
the 6670 runs cooler and less power.
even a GTX580 wont increase his fps on an MMO game, he needs to find the closest server in your area for the lowest ping.

Thanks for the advice. I did swapped it anyway. It kinda boosts some FPS on him while playing World of Tanks. And that MMO can be quite graphic extensive on some extent. smile.gif
