Building a new server (small)

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

I'm going to build myself a small mini-ATX sized server, for storage and for running some virtual machines for me to test stuff on. I was thinking of using a HTPC case or something like that for the case, and a mini-ATX motherboard capable of holding 6 GB RAM. The OS it will be running is Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V. I am thinking going with a AMD system on this build, but I don't really know yet. My budget is 500 dollars (about 3000 NOK). Could you guys recommend me a setup? The box won't be running anything heavy, I am playing around with some virtual machines now, so it'll probably be hosting pfSense, a Ubuntu distro for IRC bouncers and webchats and a testing installation of Debian for me to test out my gameservers on. Note: it MUST have atleast 6 GB ram and have a decent processor. The diskspace isn't such a big deal, 1 TB will hold, long.

Thanks alot! smile.gif

I've got the PSU and HDD's at home.

Alright, the Xeon I chose didn't work with the motherboard, and not with the RAM either. I swapped the cpu out with a i5 2500 processor, hoping they'll do the same!

the I5 will do fine and dandy tho the benifits of the i72600 with HT might also benifit .. since you want to run serval VMs i would probably look at using min 8GB ram, 18GB if you can.. thumb.gif

Yesh, it would, but it's not going to be running anything that requires _that_ much power. I'm probably going to install ESXi on it, just for the purpose of learning.

Yep cpu wise you will be fine, my main point was to use more RAM such as 8GB or 16GB. This will benifit running more VMs as im aware off. Im also about to start study in virtualzation once my server arrives and i was advised to use 16GB RAM for my studies. I want to use ESXi as my hyperviser too thumb.gif

Alright, thanks for the tip! Anyhow, if I use two 500 GB WD Blue drives in some RAID, would that work fine or do I need more performance?
That should be fine... unless you are planning a lot of I/O from some of the VMs.

My ESXi is installed to a 64GB SSD (datastore1) that I upload my OS ISO files to deploy my images from for my VMs.

I use a single 250GB 7200 SATA (datastore2) drive to run my VMs from. See Commander Herbie in my sig rigs.

Ok. May I ask what you use your VM's for?
