Messed Up Screen

Thread Starter
TL;DR Version

So yesterday I felt my temps on my 6850 weren't as good as they could be so I took off the Twin Turbo Pro I had on it and cleaned the TIM off but when I did that, I ended up getting a bit of it on the transistors. I got some tissue paper and Q tips, dabbed them in isopropyl alcohol and went to work cleaning off the transistors. Eventually I gave up trying to get it 100% off because I couldn't get some of it that was in between transistors so I put the heatsink back on and threw it back into my rig and the 1st couple times I booted up, when I got to windows the screen simply went black. Eventually I booted into safe mode and could see but everything looked pretty bad so I took it out and threw in my 4670 for a little bit.

Then today I looked around some more for something that would work better for cleaning of the TIM and found a very small little picture thing that worked pretty well. Once I felt I got all the TIM off, I threw it back in the rig and had the same issue so I took it back out again.

But when I put the 4670 back in and booted into Windows, my screen was all messed up again, though this time in a different way and it gave me a BSOD referring to win32k.sys. So I restarted, booted into safe mode and that worked dandy. Then I did a system restore to ~9 hours previous when the card worked fine. Then I booted into Windows again and let Windows auto-install the drivers for it. So I restarted again and the problems are back. [/spoiler]

I'm thinking of just reinstalling Windows but I'd like to avoid the hassle of doing that and calling them, hoping they'll let me re-use my OEM key.

Don't want to alarm you but that might not be resolved by reinstalling windows, what we do know is that it's probably not your GFX cards..

Edit, had a though - Have you tried using the second slot, not a permanent solution, but might be the primary PCIe slot on your mobo, nothing to loose trying it anyway, just be careful dude, no more accidents tongue.gif

The 4670 seems to be working now headscratch.gif
I put it in the second PCIE slot, let windows auto-install the drivers, and restarted and everything was working fine there. Then I threw it back into the 1st slot and everything went well there too.

Then I put the 6850 in the second slot, booted into windows fine, re-installed the 11.12 drivers, restarted, then the problems cropped back up again. I can however now boot into safe mode in both PCIE slots with it without any issues.

Ok that is good, some progress anyway, Hopefully I'm thinking anyway, that this could be driver conflict...

That's what I was thinking. And now either something is wrong with my audio driver or my headset and speakers both died. Today really just ain't my day.
Edit: My headset works fine, must be something else causing me problems.

Reinstalling Windows didn't fix it. Booted up, everything still looked strange, then after 1-2mins my monitor told me there was no signal detected and proceeded to go entirely black and the LED on the side of it turned orange instead of the usual green. Went into the BIOS, same thing happened after a minute or two.

hmmm ? Ok my suspicions are it's your motherboard that is the problem, easy to diagnose if you have a spare one sitting around to test everything on...

I actually have 2 spare AMD set-ups I can test with but the thing is, if it was my board wouldn't I get the same issue no matter what card I threw in it?
In any event, I suppose I'll get to testing with one of my other boards in the next couple hours.

Well, I didn't get into Windows(I think I was booting from the wrong hard drive doh.gif) but the BIOS splash screen looked funky with the 6850. Threw in the 4670 and sure enough, the graphical problem went away. Don't really know what to make of any of it.

Edit: Just want to sum everything up:
With the 6850
After a couple minutes of the PC being on, the screen goes black
On 2 separate rigs, the graphics look very messed up however in my sig rig, it doesn't do that until the log-in screen. On my other AMD rig, it started at the BIOS splash screen. The only similar things between the 2 rigs is the GPU, PSU, HDD, and case.
At one point, it was actually working fine. Then I installed the 11.12 drivers and restarted and the problems started back up again.
I can boot into safe mode with no problems.

Reinstalling Windows didn't fix it.
Neither PCIE slot fixes it.
I experience none of these issues with my 4670.

Edit 2: So ya know how the issues with the 4670 went away? Well they're back but this time on my AMD rig so it would appear as if both my GPUs are having problems at the same exact time(never had issues with either GPU before)
