Good PC horror games? - Page 5

This topic really depends on what you consider scary. Most of the games people have listed aren't actually scary...stuff just jumps at you a lot. making it startling, but not scary. If you are talking about just a spooky atmosphere then you can include about any RPG that involves a dungeon crawl or otherwise tense situation.

However, Amnesia is definitely a game that was made to be scary. You don't get to fight anything...you just run. Is it actually scary? That is a matter of opinion. By the same level of comparison Mario Cart is just as scary when you have some one behind you that has invincibility on and if they catch you they will throw you off the road. Probably depends on how immersed in a game you can get. I don't ever feel like i am the character in the game. If I die I just reload.

If you really want fear in a game you need to play a game like Eve Online...and then get warp scrambled and webbed. No reloads there...you just try to survive long enough for some one to help you or you kill the guy trying to kill you.

I will never forget the first time I had a Red chasing my miner in Ultima Online. LOL It was like the third day I had been playing. It actually got my heart pounding.

+1 for Amnesia. Had an amnesia run with my suitemates last semester. Lots of us, one room, middle of the night. Loud speakers.

Yup. It's scary alright.

This semester will probably be the Justine DLC (which i learned about from this thread)

Penumbra has got some good reviews too

Yeah, horror games really are a vague subject. I think the scariest thing about Penumbra and Amnesia would be the alone factor, and your only weapon is running away. The RE series was good when playing on a harder difficulty becaue ammo was so limited. You can't just go around shooting everything you see.

But in my personal opinion, I'll have to side with most people here. Amnesia is an excellent game, but really scary for the most part especially if you've got headphones, good audio, and the ability to get submerged in it. I also enjoyed the FEAR series, Dead Space was okay, and Metro is Metro. But I'd recommend Metro and Amnesia, then once you finished those two titles, check out the FEAR series and possibly Penumbra if you enjoyed Amnesia. thumb.gif

It ups the graphics, textures, and lighting, and even has some AI and game mechanic tweaks.
The first time you go up against a Controller in Stalker is pretty godamn creepy!
As far as an Amnesia 2, I bet they will make one or at least a game in the same vane. The game sold millions of copies, which, the devs NEVER anticipated.
Here's some Amnesia reactions. I can't seem to find the funniest one where one kid is crying and is like "WHAT EVEN IS THAT?!?!?!" and cries more....

Of everything discussed here ... of course I'm a huge Stalker SoC fan so I highly recommend it ... it definitely has it's moments of freaky-ness ... but it's not a 'horror' game where there's body parts and blood spattered everywhere ... it's scary in more subtle ways. The only time I've EVER shut off a game at night so I could continue playing in the daylight the next day ... was Lab X18 in SoC.

This being said ... the first FEAR is a pretty scary game that shouldn't be missed, and since it's older than Stalker and there aren't mods being constantly still made for it like Complete mod, it's a bit longer in the tooth and as such should be played sooner before it becomes a game like Half-Life where no-one wants to play cause it's so 'behind the times' graphically.

It's also a fantastic game, esp. if you listen to all the phone messages so you get the extra backstory. I consider it only one step below the awesomeness of Half Life 2 in terms of storyline in a FPS game. The other two ... are pretty meh, but FEAR stands a straight-up classic and should be played by all FPS fans imho.

Then get Shadow of Chernobyl with the Complete mod, and enjoy my all-time favorite FPS game. I'm jealous of anyone that gets to play it for the first time.

This is why STALKER 2 must not fail. The gaming world needs that game.

I also have to say that CoP has some of the best lighting I've ever seen in any game, if not the best. I've definitely never seen better.

I have never personally played it, but a few searches have turned up "Clive Barker's Undying'. they also listed **** like resident evil and the american mcgee's alice series, so I wouldnt say they were reliable. may be worth looking at though if you get bored.

These are the names of the mods for HL2 I was trying to remember!

I played them and found a lot like fear 2, which is a good thing.
Also, the gameplay on the source engine can make any game good, but these are really well made, both the scripted parts, combat and the little details that add to the atmosphere and the appropriated sound track.

Amnesia is the scariest game i've ever played. In fact i haven't touch it since I played 90 minutes of it and I've only seen the monster once. The awesome thing about this title is that it's not a shooter. It's an adventure game.
pretty, but not really scary, is Metro 2033. you gotta check this one out it's very well done.
