Diagnose this sound please

Thread Starter
I have heard this particular hdd make this noise a few times before but I don't know what it is or what it has been caused by, it usually lasts around 15 seconds. The hard drive is probably about 3-4 years old.

Here is the video, the noise can be heard over the constant drone of fans.
Is it failing?

Backup the data asap on that drive. Definitely sounds like its about to fail.

If any hard drive of any type what so ever makes a sound it's not supposed to, I'll be the first to throw $5 on it that it's about to fail. Unfortuately HDDs aren't supposed to make noise tongue.gif. Back up the drive and either replace or be extra generous with your backups untill it does. I find it strange that it only lasts a short period of time, but that an be caused by a number of things. My first 2 bets would be the arm getting stuck and making a sound untill it fixed it's self, or that the disk is off balance and every so many rotations it gets off and makes contact with something else enternally for a short period of time.

Unless you have a cable hanging off of a fan in your computer, slapping up against something, your hard drive is about to asplode frown.gif

More specifically, a bearing on the arm is what I'm thinking.
