Not positive on this either, but wouldn't be something outlandish...He has just a stock monitor that came with the comp, also has a tv in his room I would imagine he would hook up to, but I don't think he's expecting to get awesome resolution on a crappy TV

Edit: TIM?

Thermal interface material. It's needed between a CPU heatsink and the CPU, it's like grease. Get a nice GPU for $100-150, an e6500 like suggested, and also get a nice $20 heatsink like hyper 212+ if the case has room, if not something low profile. I know it's overkill but biggrin.gif.

Thanks for your replies...So the current mobo will work? I was initially worried that the manufacturer put on some kind of lock where I couldn't upgrade the CPU. Just want to make sure of that

Otherwise:

3.0ghz + CPU - e6500 or better

Decent 100-120 GPU

Upgrade RAM

Nice thermal compound

All of this should work with a 350w PSU?

Sorry for questions, I just want to make sure before I order for him, I want this to be a one time order kind of thing

Thanks again for all of your help, just would like to verify

what i found:
http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=324708

if you can get the tower's model number, it might help a bit. but if you cant find a bios for that, that will support a better cpu, youre out of luck. youre/he's stuck with that processor

from what i read in what ive found, the board supports up to an e6600. the problem will be finding a bios for that board to support it on that board.

As far as the bios thing, I need to read over that forum (in class ATM).

I'll try and get the tower number from him, any alternative mobo's that could be bought on a budget that would fit the specs? My fears of this becoming more and more complicated are coming true, but I am determined to figure it out.

Going to spend some time this afternoon snooping around and trying to figure this out, will be back with updates and to check for advice thumb.gif

only way to go better mobo/cpu is buy used i bet
check on here. good stuff and good prices. if you trust craigslist people, you could go that route.
i also dont think a 350watt will cut though. youd need to run bare minimum on fans, hdd, to keep a low end vid card with enough power. most vid cards call for a minimum 550 watt psu now i believe. thats with full load on a full system

Here are the ATI recommended power supply requirements for the new ATI Radeon HD 5770 and 5750 video cards that just became available:

450 Watt or greater power supply with one 75W 6-pin PCI Express® power connector recommended

i stand corrected. 450watts
