Newbie to overclock.net and building/using computers after 23 1/2 year abscence.......!!

Hello everyone and much appreciation for having this site and also to the members that have helped me so far.... I'm steve and just returned to computers last august after a looooong break! I didn't touch a computer since 1988 when I took programming 1 and 2 in high school and wrote a couple dorky games called "men and monsters" with a friend. We were using an Apple IIe back then and needless to say... It's came a long way since then. It took me a couple months of day and night learning to get fairly proficient with xp,vista and now 7. I have been learning all I can since then by buying better and better used systems and taking them apart, changing hardware and the like. I did my first build in October and to summarize it went well! storm scout, 1100t, 8 gb ripjaws 1600, 1 tb seagate mechanical sata 3 gbps, sapphire 6770 and gigabyte 970-a-d3 board with coolermaster 600 watt modular silent pro p.supply. runs great!!!
I just used the turbo overclocking feature and not any more clocking than that. I am now starting my next build tuesday and this is going to be my dream gaming system!!

Aerocool strike-x st case (released in october)
Fatality 990 fx mobo
AMD fx-8120 (wanted the 8170 or 4170 but theyre not released yet)
8 gb ripjaws x 1600 RAM
60 gb corsair SSD with T.R.I.M. for boot for Win 7
160 GIG SEAGATE BARRACUDA 7200 rpm sata 3 mechanical for gaming storage
750 gig W.D. green sata 2 7200 rpm for all other storage
O.C.Z. 550 Watt power supply
Strike-x touch screen panel for temp sensors and fan control
dual Asus burners 1-blu ray
T.V. tuner with remote---hybrid tuner
Logitech 5.1 speaker system
Zalman 9900max Red l.e.d. cpu cooler
8 and 12 inch cold cathodes(red) and 5 120mm red fans and 1 200mm red fan for top of case
red wiring wrap mod kit and 3 "tailed" red lights for case
I made a stencil of the fatality logo and painted it on backside of case
also 1-120 mm red fan for backside mobo cooling
sapphire dual 6870 cards for x-fire
24 inch acer full 1080 hd monitor 100,000:1
46" LCD 1080 p tv for gaming and movie watching with the kids
Logisys red backlit keyboard with a gigabyte gaming mouse (black)

If any of you guru's have advice I would appreciate any any all that I can get. I want to learn as much as possible before I start the build Tuesday. There have been a couple ppl helping me out with bios and other advice and thank you to them again. I have been a factory worker for 24 years building Hyster forklifts and returned to school last august for computer information systems, even though "I'm old" as my kids say. Theyre aged 18 down to 6 (have 4 boys 1-girl)

Thanks for listening and good luck to y'all.......GO GIANTS!!!!!

First of all, welcome to OCN.

Secondly, for gaming, you're better off going with the i5 2500K. Motherboard is up to you as long as it's an 1155 board with either a P67 or Z68 chipset (other ones don't support overclocking). For the SSD, I'd recommend avoiding the Corsair Sandforce drives and go with a 64GB Samsung 830 SSD. Other than that your build looks good thumb.gif

To reiterate, you really are better off with an i5 2500K + motherboard for gaming, if that is the sole intention of the box. redface.gif

And welcome back to the computer scene. biggrin.gif

Well, I will also be using the rig for some video editing, and for watching blu-ray movies with my family. I also will need it from time to time for doing my schoolwork in my net classes. More gaming but yes that other stuff too which is why I chose the 8 core cpu... well that and cost benefits... thank you for the advice!!!

hey wc eend---- thanks for the help and direction much appreciated...but I already have the parts in boxes next to me right now. Been modding the case getting it ready have a couple things being shipped, just extras. Maybe next build the 2500k if Im not happy with this setup. Wondering how the "scorpius" platform will perform (6870 card + amd 8120 + fatality 990fx chipset = scorpious) not sure but hopefully it will scream with my x-fire twin 6870's !!

Good luck on the build man I'm new here too, I would be really surprised if that build wasn't enough, I've heard some negative things about the amd chips, but for the $$$ I don't think you can beat them. Personally I have the i5-2500k and it is great, but for video editing I think you will benefit from the 8 cores. And yes go GIANTS!!!

Thanks bud, I appreciate finding this forum. I have already learned stuff that If I didn't know, It wouldve made my build much tougher. BIOS update before building is one thing, due to my fatality board needing it to run as good as possible out of the box. So I just d/loaded it and put it on my flash with all of the other drivers for my hardware. Also I still cant believe how BIG this Zalman 9900MAX red led cooler is! Huge! Nickel plated copper, it's a beauty.... Good luck to all!
