two 6970 in xfire or one 7970?

Hello everyone, I need help on deciding weather to get two 6970's or one 7970. There isnt much of a price difference on getting two 6970's vs one 7970 and most games supports xfire/sli anyway.

I will be playing on a 1440p monitor. My friend came from gtx 570 and bought himself a single 6970 and he said it runs way way smoother on such resolution. So my choices are two 6970's or one 7970. anyone?

One 7970 is more than enough for most anyone. That thing is fast and OCs like a dream!

Stick to one card and have less issues driver wise.

It's close. I have CrossfireX 6950's shader unlocked and oc'd to 930/1375mhz @ 1.18 v. They run great on 1080p. I went with them for a total of $479, and I'm super happy with it. If anything I would go with 6950's, and try to unlock them (not guaranteed of course), over 6970's. However, at 1440p, the extra ram that comes with the 7970 becomes necessary IMHO.

2 6970s are much faster than a 7970, unless you watercool and OC it to 1300/1550+ which is nearly impossible on 75% of the cards out there. The only benefit is having a single GPU and lower power consumption.

My Tri-fire 6970 setup @ 950/1400 matches 2 7970s in CF at stock, which makes the $1100 upgrade a little bit unreasonable at this time, regardless of the gains I'd get with an OC on the 7970s.

Get dual 6970s. They are more powerful than a 7970. I don't see anything you gain by dumping your current card for the new one that is only moderately faster.
Two 6970 will be faster in most games. However, hopefully the games you play have good scaling because some games like Skyrim have bad CF/SLI scaling.

My preference; a single 7970 3GB for that resolution. Need more FPS, add another one down the road. Drivers never an issue for me with Crossfire excepts for games not optimized for multi-gpu/AMD cards.

To crossfire, make sure the motherboard supports 2 PCIe @x16/x16 to minimize possible stutter.

I have a 7970, and I play at 2560x1600 (higher res than you). I have yet to find a game except GTA IV that I cannot max out completely. Even GTA IV, I only have to lower Shaders to High instead of V High. And I use the IcEnhancer mod on it as well.

VRAM, you're fine honestly with 2GB. I have yet to see over 1.4GB usage on my card (I don't play BF3 so no comment there). But I would definitely rather grab the stronger single card now, rather than the 2 weaker cards in crossfire. Less bugs this way.
