Building a server, need some help.

Hi everyone,

New to the forums posting wise, have been reading for a long time now. So I come to all of you for help. I plan to build a new server that can handle Windows Server 2008 and possibly VMware. The purpose of this computer is for me to practice using Server 2008 and VMware, and also using it for school so I can remote in while I'm there to use the server. My be making some Virtual Machines with Hyper V but not many, so I will need to have a good amount of RAM and HD space.

Also, aside from the boring using it as a learning tool stuff, if possible I would like to use it as a file/backup server, maybe stream media if I put WHS on another hd.

I guess my budget would be less then $1000. I'm not sure of what I need so I'm not sure of the price tag on this project. If you all think $1000 is an outrageous number and can be done for less with room for expansion you will make me very happy.

Thank you all in advanced.

Intel Quad core
8GB or higher ram
2x250GB hdd in raid 1 (or higher space)
Intel Mobo

run ESXI on it, virtualise 2k8 then you can properly do virtualisation. due to having intel CPU you' shouldnt have any compatibility issues

Thanks for the information Norse. Any specific Motherboard you suggest? I plan to have a number of drives so a board with 4 or more sata ports is a must, and I plan to have more than 8 GB of RAM just to be safe. I will be the one using this server primarily, remoting in from school, but I may also allow 1 or 2 other people to be on it when they need to for the same type of work.

Just check the ESXI compatability list or someone will pop up with a suitable mobo.

Depending on how many VM's you run depends on your ram needs, if you want say 2-3 i'd go with 12GB+ ram is cheap as hell at the moment.

Drive wise Raid 6 with as many large hdd as possible so you have a load of space

I've been searching for an excuse to build a new server ya see. I happen to have it all planned out. Here's a parital parts list for ~$1000. Too bad there's only two socket 2011 CPUs and the cheaper one (at $600) is always sold out. That takes you to roughly $1000 without any storage though...maybe walk it back from 32 gigs so you can add a CPU and storage biggrin.gif Or perhaps wait a couple months...?

Cheapest x79 mobo with 8 dimm slots: $209 (on special)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121552

32 gigs of memory - 8x4GB: $190 (I'm almost positive it was cheaper like two weeks ago)

CPU - LGA2011 - sold out - $600

Thanks for the replies all:

Norse - I will have to check the compatibility to see the parts picked out will work. Thanks for the heads up there.

Subassy - I really appreciate you taking the time to pick out those parts for me. The only problem is I don't ever see myself needing that much RAM, and with hard drive prices the way they are now I need to budget this project a bit better. I will probably go with 16GB of RAM for now which I see being plenty. I only plan to make a few VM's and this project needs to be something I can start making soon. I will be using it primarily for school since I have to make a server and do all sorts of fun stuff with it for my senior design project, so unfortunately waiting a few months is not possible.

I picked these parts out with help from a few people at school and this is the list I have so far.

HDD: I know its not a lot but its just to get started.

Let me know what you all this. Thank you very much in advanced.

No you probably do not need as much power as I posted. Just the 8 memory slots thing i guess got me excited.

Sometimes I can't help but get a little over-enthused about things...like desktops with 32Gigs of memory... redface.gif

just one thing, make sure you back up your RAID array if you use RAID.. even RAID 5 and 6 as you ad more drives increase the chance of failure during rebuild.. in the case of RAID 5 more than one drive can fail if you have more than three drives.. RAID 6 which fault tolerance is two drives can have a greater chance of >2 drives fail if you have more than four drives.. total array failure chances increases with more drives..

if you have a heap of drives use multiple arrays and even have some drives to back them up on smile.gif
