Can you recommend a space sim game? I used to play Elite and Wing Commander as a kid.

Well,

I guess the title is self explanatory. I used to love playing elite. Relaxing while flying between planets, trading a bit, combats...

I don't want a spacefox (just shooting) game. I actually don't mind the slow pace of a sim. I'd like to feel like a pilot biggrin.gif

So, what would you recommend. Please be as descriptive as you can, pros and cons and all.

Thanks a ton, fellow gamers!

Have you tried the X series? Complex games, pretty steep learning curve but a great sandbox. You can grow by fighting and stealing ships, by trading, building stations, etc. I haven't played that much so I can't say much more. Get X3: Terran Conflict if you want to play it, the latest one is Albion Prelude but it needs TC afaik.

And then there's Orbiter, that's a really hardcore space sim where you have to use orbital mechanics to travel beetween stations or planets. I really recomend this if you have the time and patience to learn it.

I own all the X games on Steam and they sound like they would be RIGHT up my alley but I just have no clue what to do. I have seriously tried over 5 times to start that game but it's just sooo slow and after you talk to the very first ship who tells you how to target stuff you're left with absolutely zero info on where to go or what to do. Basically you just float around aimlessly.

Wish I could find a good guide to get me started! *hint hint people

Well, the game is being installed as I type. Will get back after a day or so.

Installed albion prelude and it's very... daunting. Looks amazing, but there's absolutely no tutorial? Gah... Well, I'll look for a manual or something, it got my attention. I managed to fly around, dock and see trade ratings... not sure what to make of it... what's expensive, what's rare...

Well, I'll bang my head against it a bit more.

most of all,

Thank you both for the tips... + reps

Go onto the Egosoft forums, there's tonnes of starter guides on there. Also on youtube there are plenty of newbie video tutorials.

Like you I played elite frontier and wing commander back in the day. I wasnt a fan of x3 but will give it another go. Personally I have found EVE to be the game that gave the sci fi excitement that the old games did. It's easily the deepest most complex game I have played but is really a thing of beauty. In the end I stopped playing after a couple of months as I had just started a business. One day I will definitely go back. It's well worth a look in my opinion.
