Setting Up a Slave Rig

Thread Starter
I'm not sure exactly where this should go but my PC and one of the prospective slave PCs have AMD processors, lol. If this is in the wrong section I'd like to kindly request a mod to move it.

So I have two old school Compaqs sitting around.

Compaq 1:

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ (2.4GHz)
Generic Motherboard/Soundcard, PCI-e slot, PCI slots
200GB HDD
Onboard ATi Radeon X200
Or: NVIDIA GeForce 8800GTS 320MB
Or: NVIDIA GeForce FX5500
Or: ATi Radeon X300

Compaq 2:

Intel Celeron D (2.7GHz)
Generic Motherboard/Soundcard, no PCI-e slots
120GB HDD
Unknown Onboard GPU (Been a while)
Or: NVIDIA GeForce FX5500

Parts laying around:
NVIDIA GeForce 8800GTS 320MB
NVIDIA GeForce FX5500
ATi Radeon X300
Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Fatal1ty Professional Series
Creative SoundBlaster Audigy SE

Now, I'd like to set up a slave PC off my main rig that would serve one singular purpose: to play Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed. Unfortunately this game doesn't like my GTX 580 very much and I don't know how I'd go about just putting my 8800GTS in my PC and running it only when I need to. This would be the first thing I'd like to do if it were possible. I've tried running a virtual PC inside my main computer but I get Direct X errors and/or it doesn't detect my GTX 580.

Failing that, I'd like to make a PC that I can control via my main computer and play games on. Preferably without having two mice, two keyboard and two monitors. At that point it becomes too space consuming and a hassle for this project. TeamViewer is good for this but when it comes to playing a game that's a lot of visual data to transfer to my main PC along with sound, and it doesn't exactly run smoothly because of how taxing it is and because of network bandwidth. I think TeamViewer is slow because it uses external servers to connect, and I theorize it might be faster if I can get something LAN related which would only be limited by the bandwidth of my router and the CAT5 cables and not my ISP's cap.

I can hook both PCs up to my monitor and just switch the inputs if need be.

Whatever I don't use I'd like to put together for a PC for my friend (he pretty much just listens to music and goes on Facebook). I'll need to snag a cheap PSU for the 8800GTS. I just need to figure out if PU will run on the 8800, which I think it will, and if there are drivers to get the FX5500 to run on Win7.

I have all the Windows software needed to get these PCs up and running (XP and 7).

Any suggestions?

What you need is KVM switch, a switch that allows 2 PC to share monitor, keyboard, mouse, and any USB device.

You need VT-d or AMD-Vi to let virtual OS detect your actual GPU. So forget about virtualization (not that it is suitable for gaming in this situation anyway).

What I would do is to setup 2 independent PC, then use KVM switch to alternate between 2 PC. What you are describing (slave computer controlled by master) is called remote access. Remote access isn't meant for gaming, and you will get terrible performance out of it.

Nvidia dropped support on FX series long ago. Last driver that supports the FX series is made in 2006 (supports Vista so you probably can get it install in Windows 7).

You just made my day lol. Do you have any recommendations for a KVM switch? I'll need ports for a mouse/keyboard, DVI monitor, and 5.1 surround sound if possible, but any audio port would work. I could just run splitters to my sound system if need be, and I can hook gaming controllers up to the actual PC itself.

The FX5500 is only going to be used if for some reason the game doesn't like the 8800GTS and Dx9, which it should. I think I ran it on that GPU back in the day at one point before finding the still-existent racing community and the fixes that extended the life of the game.

I think this one is pretty good. Has modular cable, and allows sharing speaker as well. Uses DVI port.

It's nice, but just a teeny bit out of my price range lol. I'm just looking for something to mess around with. For that price I'd at least expect 5.1 support. :/

Something like this would be more suitable for what I'm doing.

If nVidia allow you to use 2x different drivers at once you'd be fine to run the 8800 + 580. You could even use the 8800 for PhysX! wink.gif
All that you'd have to do is swap the DVI/HDMI ports over at the back of the rig, i've done this before when i had a 6870 + 9800GT. So i could stress the 9800GT! biggrin.gif

The 8-series is a pain in the arse in that it doesn't like to be run with non-8-series cards. So I'm not sure if it would work.

8800 and 9800 are very similar? It may, if you have the 8800 already just try it? It'd save alot of money and hassles! thumb.gif
