Battlefield 3 and a 5970. Limited vram?

Hey guys, sorry to keep flooding the forums with graphics card topics lol but I've been doing a lot of thinking. As I mentioned in another thread, I have a 5970 with a 2500k and 8gigs. At 1920x1080 at Ultra and MSAA maxed, (in multiplayer) I run solidly at around 45-50fps, but at times it drops down into the low 20s. Being that the 5970 is still widely considered to be the fastest single card behind a 6990 and a 590, I thought it would have played a little better than that? I wasn't expecting to drop below 40 at all?

My question is, I have heard some people say that even though the card is 2gb, it s still only physically running 1gb of VRAM for each gpu, therefore that is not enough VRAM to max BF3. Then you have others who say that 1gb is still fine. So now I want you guys opinions. At 1080, am I maxing the VRAM of a 5970, which is causing the slow downs? Or is the card legitimately just not quite strong enough to fully max BF without a slowdown? I was considering picking up another 5970, but if it is indeed a VRAM max, this wouldn't help any would it?

Thanks guys!

Not enough vram I suspect is the culprit. Instead of spending a fortune on a second card, just change the settings to high and keep msaa maxed. Ultra and High are pretty much indistinguishable from one another, like basically no one can tell the difference. Performance wise, they are miles apart however. At high settings you should never dip below 50.

DX11 actually crashes my 1GB 6850 crossfire setup if I set Ultra in BF3.

ultra is mostly just MSAA vs high. Very subtle differences other than that.
So I also recommend just trying High preset (no MSAA) since postAA/FXAA does a decent job already.

I'm going to try dropping MSAA from 4x to 2x. I've read that can actually help dramatically. I just kinda wanted the bragging rights of saying I could max the game lol. So...would I actually be better off with say 2x6970s because of the increased VRAM?

0 MSAA. Forget 2x. 1GB is not enough and AMD cards under HD6990 suck @ MSAA in BF3

yes it's a VRAM issue. Ultra with x4MSAA pushes past 1.5gb of vram. you can check for yourself by running afterburner during gameplay.

I run out of Vram on my sli GTX570's with 1.28gb

I don't know if I'd go quite that far. It plays single player just fine with 4x MSAA. Just not multiplayer

You dont need MSAA. FXAA works fine.
