DX10 = DirectX 10, the current version is only DX9. It's suppose to be released next year and basically higher-end graphics, etc.

Maybe someone else can elaborate further =)

dx10 is directx 10. Heres somethings about it.
Quote:
The DirectX 10 API will have completely new and faster dynamic link libraries (DLLs) and is supposed to run much faster. The company decided to cut the backward compatibility with DirectX 9, 8, 7 and lower in this API but there will be a way to use games programmed for those APIs. Microsoft will enable support for DX 9 or lower games through a software layer, meaning it might run slower.
It is also only supposed to be supported by vista. So if you're going to update to dx10. Plan on buying Vista.

Yes as people said DX10 is DirectX 10 and we are (well most are) using DX9. DX10 is for the next gen of gaming, its a full rebuild of DirectX so no dx9 will not be able to run DX10 games. With time DX9 will lose it all and most of all games will be DX10 as this always happens in the computer/gaming world.

Its still ok to buy a DX9 card. The next generation of games will support both DX10 and DX9 and by the time games stop running DX9 altogether, your card will be too slow to run them at decent settings.

Be prepare to buy a hefty power supply since it is reported dx10 cards will use up to 130-300w. Here's the link: http://www.anandtech.com/tradeshows/showdoc.aspx?i=2770

To make life easy, buy a close to high-end card for now. Maybe around $300? Wait for the DX10s and I wouldn't recommend to get the first wave of them.

DX 10 is essentially software. So why cant you flash your video card to use it?

The hardware needs to know how to interact with direct X I believe.

Why would they want to let you do that when they can force you to buy new cards???

I'm gonna buy a current one that's decent and wait it out until DX10 has been out a while, then get a new one (probably new PSU lol) and get Vista+ new games
