Bad GPU Core? Or is it BIOS/Driver issues? (Sort of long, help GREATLY appreciated)

Here's the gist of it.

Got 2x5970; a Diamond and a Sapphire card.

Diamond is definitely working fine.

The Sapphire seems to be giving me issues.

Tested my PCI-e slots by swapping the Diamond card around so they're fine. 1200W PSU so it's not a power issue.

Did a fresh install of Windows to be sure.

I can boot into Safe Mode fine with both cards in.

Safe Mode Device Manager shows this (before installing Catalyst):

I was able to boot into Windows fine without Catalyst Control Center and drivers installed.

After installing Catalyst + drivers, my screen just went completely black with a blinking underscore cursor.

If I try to restart it'll just either hang at the Windows loading screen or just say that there's no signal getting to my monitor.

Safe Mode Device Manager shows this (after Catalyst installed):

Anyone experience similar issues before? Is the Sapphire card bad? Or is it because I don't have a Crossfire cable/dummy plug set up?

Bought it off a guy on Craiglist (non-local so I used PayPal). Tried texting the guy to see if he has a receipt and whether or not the warranty would still be valid if it's the card. Haven't heard back yet so will give him a bit before I decide whether to dispute with PayPal or not.

----

Someone suggested I try Catalyst 11.9 drivers but that didn't work. Same issues.

Tried removing Catalyst + drivers and installing with just the Sapphire. Same issue. I'm able to boot into Windows fine, once Catalyst is installed it hangs at Windows loading screen. I can then get into Safe Mode fine.

Sapphire BIOS: 012.013.000.002.034996 (Is there a newer BIOS from Sapphire available?)

Diamond BIOS: 012.020.000.028.037492

Gonna try Drive Sweeper just to make sure all the Catalyst stuff is gone.

Before blaming the card, I would recommend trying a different bridge. If that doesn't help, yes, it's PayPal dispute time.

Well, that's the thing.

Wasn't trying to crossfire it just yet (don't have a bridge).

But trying to boot normally to Windows (Catalyst 12.1 installed) with just the Sapphire card in there alone causes the computer to hang on the Windows loading screen.

I've also reset all the BIOS settings to default too so nothing is overclocked but that didn't help any.

I see. Sounds like the card's malfunctioning to me.

Yeah, figured as much.

Was hoping otherwise but it turns out Sapphire is willing to RMA without the receipt.

$15 processing fee and 1-2 week turnaround according to the automated section of the e-mail.

Here's to hoping the time is accurate.

Thanks and rep'd.
