USB is only 5v. Most fans take 12v, which presents a big issue. You could theoretically put 2 USB ports in series to get 10v, but this still won't get you to max RPM's.

You could always do a dc-dc mosfet stepup, but that takes at least a little knowledge of electrical engineering.

Your best bet is to buy 2 USB A to B (M-M) adapters, isolate the pins and their wires, and attach them in series. Then solder that to a molex and you should be good to go with any fan as long as you don't need maximum RPM.

You can probably just buy one of these (Thats designed to run at 5v or steps itself up) for less than you could make one. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811999130&nm_mc=OTC-Froogle&cm_mmc=OTC-Froogle-_-Case+Fans-_-Thermaltake-_-11999130

I have two fans running on one USB at a computer at home. Probably can't run at max speed but they were good enough for me. No noise and keeps H50 under 20C.

Do you understand how to create a series circuit with 2 USB cables? I could walk you through it if you want, because doing it that way will get you the most power, probably enough to run a 120mm at pretty high RPMs.

Alright. Its not too complex.

First acquire 2 identical USB cables of slightly more length than you desire. The thicker the cable the better for this as you will need to do your own stripping and a little soldering. (If you don't have access to a soldering iron, almost every school from HS to grad will have a ton and I'm sure some of your friends do too).

1. Cut both the cables off at the end you don't need, as close as possible to the connector. Make sure you leave the side that plugs into your usb ports.
2. Strip back the black sleeving a good inch to expose the 4 wires underneath.
3. You are usually good to cut off the white and green wires as close to the edge of the sleeve. Put a little hot glue over them to make sure they don't touch and short. If all the cables are the same color, get out a multimeter and test them 1 by one till you hit the 2 wires that give you 5v. Keep those and toss the rest.
4. Strip back the red (+) and black (GND, -) wires on both cords.
5. Attach the red wire on cable 1 to the black on cable 2. Solder these together nicely, then electrical tape. You will be left with 1 red and one black wire.
6. Cut apart the fan cable and attach the red USB wire to the yellow fan wire, and the black to the black. Solder this joint and then electrical tape over it.

Gratz, it should work!

Ohh, sorry for the double post but this is pretty important.

I think the ground on the USB port is able to take the 10v, and even if its not the voltage drop across the fan SHOULD be enough to bring it down to at least 5v. I recommend testing this first on a junker computer or wall outlet USB port to make sure you don't blow anything. If you don't have either of those laying around, your friends computer should do the trick ninja.gif
