Lower temps for sure but you might want too add more rads to keep the water temps as close as possible to ambient (look at my loop using 360 + 120 mm rads wchich can lower the load temps to 44°C on cheap 7years old waterblock when running fans at 2000rpm)
1.6V 24/7 is not safe. Your cpu will degrade in 3-6 months(according to what i have seen on 940's running 1.6V).But it's your machine.Do what you want.

The x60 will end out costing me $40 more than the h80. I think it's worth it. Maybe later I'll add some nice high pressure fans but for now if it let's me get 4.4 stable I'll be happy.

Whoa whoa whoa.

So I'm new here, but have always kinda been a dork for my computers... not an overclocking, case-modding, watercooling dork, but a dork nonetheless.

Back in late 2010 I bought a Phenom II 955 (3.2ghz). It's always been enough for my needs, but lately I've had the itch to see what kind of upgrade path I have available. The mobo, an ASUS M4A88TD-V, doesn't give me much wiggle room, so I went sniffing around overclocking options and naturally ended up here.

And you guys are telling me, if I'm reading this right, that I can likely OC this thing from 3.2ghz to around 4.2ghz just by tweaking the BIOS and getting some good aftermarket cooling?

*mind blown*

It's possible to get to 4.2, but not definite. Each OC is limited by the individual chip, temps, mobo, RAM and a host of other factors. You should be able to get to 3.5 without too much sweat, but any more than that may require fine-tuning and lots of patience.

Do you know if you have a Black Edition chip? These have an unlocked multiplier which makes overclocking much easier to start out with.

Welcome to OCN, and fill in your sig rig to make it easier for others to see what hardware you have!

Thanks for the welcome! Got the sig rig filled out, and yes, it's a Black Edition.

When I first got it I remember OCing to 3.5 since it was stupid-easy, but temps were climbing a bit and I assumed without any aftermarket cooling it would just shorten the lifespan of the chip. Reverted to stock and called it a day.

My first step should be probably be picking up an H60, huh?

I would go H-100 if you have the room , my h-60's struggle with Denebs at 4.0 or better

Room shouldn't be an issue, have to check the exact measurements though. Thanks for the suggestion.

I *knew* if I registered here I'd be back on Newegg in seconds, haha.

Good time to experiment with a custom loop too , if you want. They have 240mm radiator kits that are around $150 or so now.

Am I correct, though, that I should just go straight to WC (either AiO or custom) rather than doing something like a Hyper 212 first? I'm looking to build an entirely new rig within the next six months, but want to squish the most I can out of this one before doing so.
