MSI Z68A-GD55 - Good board for $170?

Thread Starter
I need to upgrade my system badly and am on a tight budget. Is this board worth $170?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130622

And getting a i5-2500k - I should be fine with an i5 instead of i7 for a couple years right? Only games I play are WoW, Star Wars, and Diablo 3 when it comes out, but want to be able to play any newer games if I want to.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072

I would be using my current PSU, RAM, GFX Card, etc until I can upgrade those. My 520w PSU won't have any issue running this motherboard and processor with my other parts will it?

$399 for both of this is the very high end of my budget, so I'll probably have to buy the motherboard first then the processor since the board is on sale right now and god knows when the processor will be on sale. Unless someone knows any other combo for about $300 max.

TL;DR - Will these be fine for my needs and will my current psu be enough to power these until I upgrade it in a few weeks.

EDIT: What about this processor? i5-2400

That board is okay but there are better for the money... this asrock is really nice for 130 shipped -

Also... the i5 2400 can't overclock, only k-series processors can

I'm not that worried about overclocking. Look at what I'm using currently, it's going to be way better than this core2duo even if it is one of the better ones out there.

That board looks good, but I've never used ASRock. Anyways, will my current 520w psu be enough power for right now or no? And will I be able to run my DDR2 memory on these boards until I can upgrade? Kinda want to have the ability to upgrade processors, ram, etc in a couple months.

these are the boards i would be looking at
ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131792
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8Z68VGEN3/

ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 LGA 1155
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131790
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8Z68V_PROGEN3/

This is abit expensive, but if you can find a deal on it would be great
ASUS P8Z68 DELUXE/GEN3 LGA 1155
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131791
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8Z68_DELUXEGEN3/

good crossfire and sli features depending on the board
Also you could look at Asus p8p67 boards aswell..

i would consider looking at the ASRock extreme editions as well, they are rock solid great overcloking, xfire or sli boards.. and have come a long way to become one of the big 3 manufactures
a selection here
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&N=-1&isNodeId=1&Description=asrock+gen3&x=24&y=9
and my recomendation
ASRock Z68 EXTREME4 GEN3 LGA 1155
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157264
ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 LGA 1155
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157271

or if you plan to use the i5 2400 any lga1155 borad will do even sub $100 but i would look at this
ASRock Z68 PRO3 GEN3 LGA 1155
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157279

any of these would be a better option over the MSI thumb.gif

This looks like it's going to be my best bet. I wonder if I could somehow get the i5-2300 series and it be just as good. What are the resell values on the i5 series that aren't 2500k and up? I could always sell it off in a couple months and upgrade to a 2500k with this board couldn't I?

EDIT: There's a few comments that are saying Hyper 212+ heatsinks overlap the first memory slot. That's going to be a problem for me if that's true. I would want to use all of my sticks until I upgrade em to something better.

Your 520w psu is fine, these chips are very efficient...but you can't use DDR2 only DDR3 is supported. Ram is really cheap right now though (8gb for $40).
EDIT: A 2300 is fine but for only $5 more get the 2400. There isn't any difference but clockspeed between the i5 2xxx cpus.
Double Edit: I had a 212+ and as long as your ram isn't ridiculously tall you'll be fine.

The slots won't downgrade the ram at all? Or are teh slots totally different sizes? I was under the impression that while they wouldn't be as good in ddr3 slots they would at least work in them.

DDR2 will not fit in DDR3 slots and the CPU only supports DDR3.

im not sure on the resale price you will get for your cpu. but if you plan to upgrade in a couple of months i would go higher in the board at min the ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 LGA 1155, ASRock Z68 EXTREME4 GEN3 LGA 1155 or ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68. i would upgrade to an Ivy bridge I53570K (Ivy's I52500k equivalent) if its going to be in a couple of months..

as too your cooler and RAM, im not 100% sure with these boards but i expect as with alot of boards you will need low profile RAM to use all your slots so as mentioned you willl need new ram so get low profile smile.gif

Turns out I MAY be able to push a little more money into it so if I am I'm thinking about:

board - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157265
cpu - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072
ram - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231428 - need to try and lower the ram cost if possible. should I try and stay with 1600 or go with 1333 or 1066?
