OK. I'm looking to setup a home webserver as i do computer service that includes hardware and software resale.... I was recently notified that i will be without a job as of july 1 and i'm hoping to get a website up and running to start getting more of my services into the area. I have a domain name and i just setup the dynamic DNS services through my pfSense box...
My question is what OS should i run. I'm planning on using the Apache web server, so IIS is not an issue. I'm thinking XP due to it's low resources. I have licencing for Windows 2000, XP Home, XP Pro, XP Pro x64, Server 2003, Windows Ultimate x64, and Server 2008 R2 x64. (where not noted as x64 assume that i have a x86 license)
I'm also thing of hosting an old BBS game off the same machine. this will be minimal, as the game server installed is 23Mb so i don't see this influencing much of anything.i'm tossing back and forth about actual implementation as well.
I'm thinking of throwing another nic in my pfSense box and creating a DMZ. in the DMZ i'll throw in one of my spare computer that i have laying around as i don't expect much traffic. i have a few AMD dual core, and the option of 775 Pentium dual core - Core 2 Quad for spare chips to get some of these machines running, i also have a pile of 478 gen Dells laying around that i could create into a "server".
I could also take one of those same machines and install Vmware vSphere Hypervisor and host two independent XP VM's... Again im just throwing around ideas.
What do you all think....
Edit** Also i have a 6.6-8Mbps upload speed so i think for the amount of traffic im going to be getting i should be fine.

Particularly when a compromised box would expose your whole home network (assuming you're not properly sandboxing everything internet facing in their own vlans / NATs)
