This may be slightly off topic, but id rather when people referred to that god awful will smith movie they didnt call it "I Am Legend", that film did the book no justice what so ever, and shouldnt be allowed to share its name. Id rather it was referred too as "that crappy interpretation of I Am Legend with Will Smith".

On topic: I thought the same thing lol.

Ok, what is the point of a placebo in this study. Placebos are typically used to nullify the possible effect of the mind generating the response being looked for when testing a drug. I.e. weight loss pills, where a person may exercise harder to be more strict with diet if they think they are actually close to acheiving their weight loss goal. This is a damn vaccine for HIV, you cant just believe really strongly that you wont pass it on to someone you had unprotected sex with, so a placebo here is useless. It's like giving a diabetic an insulin placebo and waiting to see if he/she actually dies or not

Read my post a few posts above this one.

In this study, a placebo serves 2 functions.

1. It studies whether or not a person may "will" themselves to get better. (yes, even in diseases like this, the mind is a powerful tool of healing).
2. If the drug goes south and ends up killing those given the drug, then only 50% of patients will be affected.

You don't just use a placebo to do the things you listed above. It's a double blind study for a reason.

Ok, i can understand where you are coming from on point #2, but it would be much more effective to simply cut the sample population in half and not give a placebo and not mess with the lives of many for reasoning that isn't logical. As for your first point, that is beyond absurd. Power of the mind can yes heal people, but to a certain degree. A cold yes, addiction maybe, tumors - sure i'll bite and say a lucky few have done it. But HIV? Give me a break man

Hey guys. This new is super old. A lot of teams are developing anti-HIV solution. It takes 5-10 years to develop a vaccine/medication and get approval to do test on humans. They were only approved to use it on humans and you won't see this until a good 10-20 years on the market.

There is other projects working on actually curing infected HIV patient. This vaccine only prevent the HIV to infect you but once you got it, it's too late. As you should know, vacinne never work at 100%, so you will still have to use condom with new partner until you both do test and make sure the other isn't going elsewhere of course.

This is not going to change anything with your sexual habit, it is just an extra precaution in case you are in contact with infected blood or if you were too high/drunk to put a condom redface.gif

Oh yea and just a reminder, when you get the HIV, there is a 10 years incubation period until you begin to have symptoms. Most of the time HIV infected human don't know they are infected!

You don't just use a placebo to do the things you listed above. It's a double blind study for a reason.

1.There is no such thing as placebo effect in vaccine studies. Vaccines are preemptive, not treatment. You get a vaccine for the flu, get coughed on a lot, and still don't get the flu because your body already has antibodies present that tag cells infected with the virus immediately which allows your macrophages and Killer T cells to attach and kill the infected cell. This is no different. If your body doesn't have the primer, it doesn't have the protection. I know the point of double-blind trials, I took microbiology and biochemistry in university and had to learn how drug trials are set up. I understand the scientific reason for doing it this way. I just don't understand how it got past a ethics committee.
2. Phase 1 of the drug trial is testing on currently infected HIV patients to see if that exact thing happens.

Look at the abstract for a different HIV vaccine with placebo controls. http://ukpmc.ac.uk/abstract/MED/15688278

If the placebo group had a 7% infection rate and the vaccinees had a 1%, how is it ok that you sentenced that 7% to die early when you could have given then the vaccine. I don't care if they're using the dregs of society, it's not alright to not give them a vaccine for a life altering disease. You can use already in place disease modelling to see the rate of transmission of HIV in at risk populations, and work from that.

Yeah, I think the "placebo" group is probably just what they mean for a "control" group so they can gauge an understanding of how infected+vaccinated people are reacting vs. how uninfected+vaccinated people are reacting vs. how infected+unvaccinated people are reacting, to see about any sorts of anomalies/irregularities, etc. that are occurring.
