Welcome as well! *Q6600's are great bointers for 2D benchies.. do your research and OS tuning.. a couple milliseconds can increase your boints and placement by quite a bit with all the subs there are on the bot!

Welcome Mike-IRL,

CL3P20 is correct, a little research can save you a lot of time when benching!

I'm going to bench my brother's PC in a minute,
I think the details should be in my sig.
He's got 4x1GB sticks of RAM but I'm just going to use two.
Any last second tips to optimise things?

I'm following this guide running microXP but mightn't have time for many benches tonight as it's already 1AM and I haven't installed the OS or OCed his rig yet except to 3.6.

Ran into a slight hitch, I can't find a floppy drive and XP won't install without one.
I'll try slipstreaming some drivers onto my USB.

Edit: I slipstreamed the drivers and it didn't work. No idea what I did wrong as I used the ICH10R SATA AHCI drivers and there were no other ICH10R drivers that I saw on the intel 4 series f6 disc. thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif

I'm going to try a few different SATA modes in the BIOS and try switching the hard drive to the marvell controller but it's 2:30am here and I won't have time to finish tomorrow.

E2:
I'll give it about another hour trying to install and set 4 as my limit to get in some benching runs. I'll probably just keep going if the OS works though. smile.gif

E3: Tried slipstreaming the drivers and forcing FDD emulation on a USB drive in the BIOS, also tried every HDD setting in the BIOS.
I'm going to remove the HDD from my own rig and use that.
It's running 7 so it's not ideal but I tweaked it a little for some 3D benching and it's better than nothing, I'll only get about twenty minutes of overclocking and benching so if I get any results that aren't terrible I'll take them at this point.

E4: Literally just turned on LLC, changed multi to 9 and booted at 4.05. Stable enough to be posting here too.
12.7 secs in superpi untweaked.
It's only worth a couple of points but the OC was so easy I should get some more out of it.

E5: 4.2 superpi, this chip is a lot better than my old one. Browsing hwbot and posting here at 4.2, feels like I'm not even pushing it.
Not tweaked as there's no point until I find the max speed it'll run at. 12.355s

What board are you running with that needs a floppy to install XP? Have you tried one of the stripped OS, notably the Tiny series of OS out there. I have never needed a floppy drive for loading OS all the way back to Socket 370. If you need some help getting a copy I'm sure that I can figure a way to get one to you.

Also, don't forget that if you are running a Q6600 Kentsfield to submit a score for the February 2012 competition. no one has submitted for OCN so far, so any little bit will help

[Edit: Sorry, it's a P5Q-E]
I was trying to install tinyXP. I didn't get to work tonight but I'll figure it out before I get the chance to have another go with this system.
The error I was getting was 0x6F which is supposedly a lack of SATA drivers so it's just a case of figuring out what I'm doing wrong there.
If you have got a copy of an OS that works though I'd gladly take it. smile.gif

It's 5am here and I've got an assignment I have to get tomorrow or I can't visit my girlfriend in Dublin on Valentine's day so I've got to go to bed.
A little bit of tweaking on XP and tightening my RAM timings would get my superpi time to sub 12 seconds and I topped my previous CPU's best CPU-Z submission with 4.32GHz on water.

I wish I could overvolt the RAM heavily and tighten the timings as much as possible but it's my brothers and I made the mistake of telling him D9GMH is awesome but easy to kill and he's now afraid I'll break it. (Iike I broke my own kit a few years back tongue.gif)
On another note, I really love my old board, it's so much quicker to reboot when something goes wrong than my D2H.

I got most of the way through loading windows at 485x9 but it crashed after the first loading screen, it might do it with more voltage and I'd have supplied it if I didn't have to worry about killing it. I did bump it to about 1.55V before I gave up though, it's not my hardware so I'm not going to be risking it if I can help it. (unless I get it on dry ice in which case I'll make it clear it's at serious risk before I even start)
This chip does 4.3GHz on 1.52V. wheee.gif

Sorry I couldn't run more but I'm going to be sleeping in as it is and I've got valentine's shopping and an assignment I need to do tomorrow.
And thanks for the advice on tweaking, I will tweak it if I get the chance to bench this rig again but I just didn't have time to do anything but change the affinity, priority and disable processes with the OS issues.

I need to beg my friend for his dry ice pot now. thumb.gif

That is a pretty common board and I can't think it would have any problems with drivers. Your loading the OS when your at stock right? (stupid question I know but I've had that problem before with an unstable system, turned out it was my overclock.) I'll PM you with a link for the Tiny I have here, once I get it loaded, that I know works perfectly, since I use it all the time. Maybe that will help and its the copy you have. Those are pretty nice clocks for a Q6600 and if you get that DICE pot you'll probably see even more.

I tried installing it on my D2H and got the same error so it's either my copy of microXP or I'm useless at nlite. tongue.gif
I was installing at 3.6GHz but I ran 12 hours of prime and twenty passes of LinX on about 3.5GB of memory back when I put it together so it should be stable.

I don't know when my brother won't be using his PC and I've got a few assignments due this month along with an exam or two.
I'll try and get at least a run on water with my 470s done for the HWbot contest but I don't think I'll have time for dry ice this month even if my friend does give me the pot.

I study electrical & electronic engineering at a local university that sells LN so hopefully I can make up some spoof about investigating the thermoelectric properties of silicon semiconductors and borrow a dewar at some point for LN runs. It'll probably have to wait until the summer but I'd love to try running LN. smile.gif
