Even with the newest motherboards the deneb core is still slower then a core2 core. Though the price for the phenom II is a lot less and you can get get all the new features with the new boards, but the old tech was never bad. Really AMD CPU's are great if you want core2 like performance at a vary low cost, but intel chips are not at a bad price right now and even the lower end chips make a good gaming pc.

Few people had and/or have the Core 2 Quad Q9x50s, which are the better ones. The Core 2 Duo E8x00s, and some of the lesser quad core and dual cores still hold their own, but not too admirably unless you're one the few with a good setup surrounding it. The rest moved on to better Core i series CPUs.

Phenom IIs that do xGHz are often cheaper and/or more readily available than the older Core 2 Quad Q9x50s and the stuff needed to take them to the same speed, but the latter is a bit faster clock for clock in general. In games that don't need four cores/threads, even my old 4GHz Core 2 Duo E8600 would match or outdo most AMD setups (stock for stock, it even outdid the Core i7 920 a lot in that situation while using less power). LGA 775 isn't dead (although it's definitely showing it's age some), but this is OCN, where it's also a hobby and not just a need, so people buy the newest things. I believe it was one of Intel's best (at least within the recent times) platforms all around. I miss mine.

It's about more than raw performance though. The Phenom II introduced similar performance at a much cheaper price and with more longevity (tech-wise). I'd prefer a Core 2 all around, but the Phenom IIs had their own perks.

Edit: The above post sort of summarizes what I was explaining too.

No UEFI, no SATA III, no USB 3.0.
The energy consuption and feature set (or lack there of) is not as appealing as those on 790FX, 890FX and 990FX or any modern AM3 or AM3+ chipset.
The energy consumption of the Intel chipsets is probably negated by the higher energy consumption of the actual CPUs; of the Phenom II versus a Core 2 Quad, no?

UEFI is nice, but not mandatory, and SATA III and USB 3.0 is probably mostly fluff right now for most people.

That is as long as you do not try to pick up a 9550 on the cheap, hard one to find for a "non-preminum" price.I do have 3 EP45-UD3P's and the top I can afford cpu wise is the Q6600.I do like that there are so many cpu's for these boards under 50.00 used, and the combinations make perfectly good desktop PC's,with the ability to play with overclocking as a bonus.

I would go Phenom ii route if you were looking to go for a Core 2 Quad setup. IF you can find a Q9550 it is worth it still but NOT at the $300 US dollar prices I am finding. I just upgraded an old AMD system with a Phenom ii 830 from Microcenter when they had their sale for $50.0 US. Runs great.
The Core 2 Q6600 seem to be fairly available and are decent for being old tech but I would look at an i3, i5, or Phenom ii.

I bought my Q9550 for $170 US, anything more than $100 is a rip off to me considering how hard it is to find a Good LGA 775 motherboard and the i3 and Phenom ii are priced so much better.

Q9550 is Great! thumb.gif
You won't regret getting a 7950 that Q9550 will drive it just fine.

There are just other cost vs performance options out there which bloat the possibilities biggrin.gif

I don't agree that your Q9550 is enough for a 7950.

I run a 6970 with my q9650 and the GPU has only 31 per cent usage while my CPU is maxed at %100 oC'd to 3.6Ghz.

My 6970 is pretty much sleeping while my CPU is working it's ass off.

thats funny as it powered a overclocked gtx470 perfectly fine, thats pretty much 6950 performance. I currently have a gtx465 in it right now and it has no problems loading the gpu at 100% while playing games. Just to note if your using v-sync then your not gonna load your gpu's to 100%

Most games won't load the cpu at max, only game that gets close is BF3.
