I agree. So I guess another question is, should we also clearly define which programs are capable of scaling up on cores as well as threads?

Where is DuckieHo - I know he knows how we can identify these things. tongue.gif

This is a neat idea.

It would also be nice if we could not only compile a list, but also see if we can pool benchmark/results from users with particular/characteristic CPU's for a given architecture release (i.e. PhII dual/tri/quad/BD, i3/i5/i7). The reason is inspired by Riou's point above, though it might be difficult to ensure consistency among results.

Well let's get started then - I'll draw on the community to begin with and if anyone is interested in devoting a little time to helping improve and continue compiling the list with me outside of OCN (IRC / Skype / Ventrilo ... whatever works!), please send me a private message.

I'll start with some (super) easy ones found in gaming lists:

Multi-threaded games to add to the list:

BF3
BFBC2
MS FSX

Multi-threaded applications(programs):

Adobe CS 4 & 5
Sony Vegas (from which version, anyone know?)

Even if we just start with submissions like this - we can get started. I'll keep a spread myself for now but if you are interested in contributing, please please please message me. smile.gif

Great idea, and to quicken the start, I'd say use google spreadsheets to let anyone populate the list and then after that have a small group run and fine tune it since I'm sure they'll be fakes/conflicting entries.

I think this is the route I'm going to go on. I'm sure few people will respond right away so this would seem to be the best bet to get it going as quickly as possible. This (obviously) won't be compiled overnight but I always like to move quickly when doing things. tongue.gif

So as of now I'm working an Excel spreadsheet here and posing some inquiries about a few things in the meantime. I think the bigger question out of this is:

Which programs that are multi-threaded use more than 3+ cores? Which use 2 and which use only 1?

I think it will play a bigger role in sorting the list. thinking.gif

UPDATE:

So as my questions are being/ have been answered - (thanks Duckie) - it seems I will need a couple of things from the community to get this started.

The first place to begin is to list the commonly most used programs what we as users often use on a daily basis. Some of the programs/apps that we can exclude would be monitoring tools like HWMonitor, or GPU-Z, and so forth.

So for instance commonly found programs used would be MS Office software, Audacity, Ventrilo, web browsers, and so on and so forth. Once that list is created I can begin to identify things a little bit more clearly.

Should I make a new thread for this list or would you all mind posting here?

Wouldn't matter to me if it's within this thread or another one. But it might be nice to update the OP with the progress so far?

The one thing that might complicate this more is that, let's take the example of MS Excel. Some functions/operations in Excel are multi-threaded, whereas others are not, so depending on the specific application of Excel, it may be difficult to generalize extent of CPU core utilization. Maybe that's putting the cart ahead of the horse though...

I know it might be outside of the scope, but would it also be useful to indicate whether an application on the list can also take advantage of GPU-acceleration? Maybe indicate the extent or brand of GPU necessary?

I love your idea, but that's not how threads work. Threads are, for a lack of a better definition, a program within a program. A thread might handle a large task, and a thread might handle a simple task like "Is the ESC key pressed right now? Y/N?". Most (90+%) programs you run have multiple threads, but usually when people say "single threaded" they mean "One big, computation-heavy thread, and a bunch of smaller ones".

TL;DR: Multi-thread != multi-core.
