16gb 1866mhz help

So Ill be having an ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z motherboard soon.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131759

and a Patriot Viper Xtreme 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220562&Tpk=8gb%201866%20patriot

Its a must for me to have 16gb because of my vmwares. If I purchase another set of these RAM to get a total of 16gb, would all 4 chips run on its stock 1866mhz on the said mobo? or is it better for me to buy myself a new set of 16gb 1600mhz instead?

i would look at 16GB of G.Skill RipjawsX 1600 CL8s 2 x [2x 4GB] kits... abit exe but i have them and they work like a dream.. you dont really need 1866 unless you can get a good deal on it.. thumb.gif

Thanks! but the problem is I already have an 8gb 1866mhz patriot and buying another 8gb of the same kit is much less than getting a whole new 16gb kit with less hz. So if I buy another 1866mhz of the same kit as my old one will it work? all 16gb running on 1866?

Patriot makes damn good RAM. They're not as popular as G.Skill and some others, but the last several sets I've had from them overclocked with ease and easily ran at their rated specs.

Conversely, the G.Skill kits I've had would never run at advertised specs.

Dual kits are rated to run at a specified speed with usually those two sticks and nothing else. That's why it's better to get a quad channel kit that's actually rated with all four DIMM's in place.

Anyway, if you get another kit, it may run at 1866. Then again it may not, but it should easily run @ 1600MHz. Note, there's not much performance difference to be had from that additional 266Mhz. Instead play around with the timings on the RAM; see if you can tighten them up. By tightening the timings you can gain just as much, if not more, performance than from looser timings and higher frequency.

it should be work being the same kit, same speed rating..

like my Sandy Bridge, as you know is only rated at 1333 but i just added 16GB [4 x 4GB dimms] and everything set up nicely.. as with me its only 1600 its still technically an OC on sandy bridge so i think your situation it should work fine IMO..

if you bought a 1600MHz kit the 1866 kit would probably downclock to 1600.. smile.gif

Thats awesome! I just want to make sure those 16gb will work. Even if I buy the 1866mhz I just wanted them to all be the same even though it may run on 1600mhz instead. Now Im pretty confident to just spend about $50 on another kit instead of a whole new kit of $120+ish.
