New to OC'ing

Thread Starter
Hey guys I'm new to OC'ing and the site Id like some help to oc
I'll list my pc below

CPU i7 950 quad core 3.06ghz
Mobo asus sabretooth x58
Ram corsair xms3 3x2gb ddr3 triple chan 1600mhz
Ps hec Zephyr MX 750w
Air cooler corsair A70
Case cool master CM2 advanced
Video cards 2 radeon hd 6850 1gb cross fired
HD:500gb WD 7200rpm 32mb cache(new hd was DOA waiting on the rma for a 1TB WD caviar black 7200rmp 64mb cache)
I was idle temp at 80c with stock fan and the 650 power supply...but I just replaced the heatsink and power supply wasn't sure if my pc was power hungry with the 650w PS with the two new vid cards and that but needed a new ps for extra plugs for hd's and such...
But now I idle at 30-34c and with stock chip set at 100% load I'm around 50-55c
I'm wondering what I can safely OC to and a guide on how to do so.

Thanks in advance

is i guide i found i would not go over 80 even though i says you can go higher
post #3 of 12
Follow that guide from the link that perfectnova put up, its the same one I followed when I was getting into overclocking. With the A70 cooler your temps should be easily kept under control for a 4GHz oc. Depending on all factors like board, ram etc I could see you getting you 4.2GHz with some time spent tweaking. Don't be afraid to get up around 1.35vcore, as long as your temps stay under 75-80 under stress testing with Intel Burn Test or Prime 95 that is. Try a 20x or 21x multiplier and work your way up on bclk from 180-200 (over 200 will need ram overclock or slow ram speed and timing adjustments). Make sure you read about bumping up vcore and learn about setting your ram timings, etc. Any questions just ask away i'm here to help, I have spent lots of time tweaking my oc on my 930.

Good luck thumb.gif

Make the front and sides intake and the top and rear exhaust. You will have plenty of air movement with a setup like that....

If i put a side intake fan it the lower slot(top one is blocked from the a70) that should be right near the vid cards....what about that gpu bracket mount(80mm fan can fit on it) would I need that or should I just use that instead of the side fan(since it'd probably pull air in)?

Does that GPU bracket go on the end of the card closest to the front of the case and draw air in and push back to the card? If so I guess you could use it if you want. I would also use the bottom 120mm side fan for fresh cool air.
