Looking for Phenom II X4 960t advice.

Thread Starter
Hello,

I am brand new to the site. I am wanting some general advice for a build I am currently researching.

CPU--AMD Phenom II X4 960T
Motherboard--Asus M5A97 or MSI 970A-G45
RAM--Patriot Viper Xtreme Series 8GB DDR3-1600 (PC3-12800) CL 8 Desktop Memory Kit (Two 4GB Memory Modules)
GPU--XFX Radeon HD 6790 1GB

I am a casual gamer and the computer will be used for my gaming, plus my daughter's web gaming. I am wanting a low cost solution, but the best I can get at the price. My question is on the motherboard. Which options would be best? I will want to try unlocking the 2 core and overclocking on this machine. I will also want to try Crossfire...but in the distant future, ie a year or more.

Extra..the case I am looking at is on the Xoxide site...Xoxide X-Purity EXE Edition Case. It needs to look good for the wife to be excited. The more the wife is excited, to less she will complain about the 500 price tag...lol.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Nitro

Completely avoid the MSI 970A-G45 as it is known for VRM failure with higher TDP quad, hexa and octo core AMD processors.

m5a97 should be OK
m5a99 would be better
http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=M4A79XTD-EVO-PB-R&cat=MBB this looks good..same chipset as m5a79
I think it has (the geeks one) more chokes,too....which is good

Go for the 6850 at least. Its only 20$ more. Take off 4gb or ram if you have to.

Get the Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3. I have one of these running a 960t unlocked to a 1600t x6 @ 3.75GHz (Didn't want to push any further on air and less than stellar PSU. As a x4 was easily able to reach over 4GHz. These boards are usually around $100 on Newegg and probably one of the best in it's price range. The ASUS is probably comparable put I don't own one so I can't speak on how good it is.

I agree that you should go for a HD 6850 over the HD 6790. The 6850's are going for as low as $135 on Newegg plus a $15 rebate for the Sapphire but the Gigabyte 820MHz is a much better choice for $25 more.

Stay away from MSI boards, they are known for VRM failures.

It seems AMD+ASUS is the best combo. No MSI No Gigabyte

Thanks for the warm welcome and the replies. I am actually getting the whole system.
The parts listed above and the following.
ASIs m5a97 Evo
Phenom II x4 960T
The ram listed above
OCZ 600w modular PSU
XFX 6850
The xoxide case
Thinking of a 500gb HD SATA3
I am cannibalizing my DVD drive for now and will add a touch screen
Monitor this summer with a blue ray drive.

How does this setup sound and any suggestion on replacement item to:
1) save money
2) better equipment for same or lower price.

Thanks for the help.
