Actually he is mostly right.

The 4100 is about on par with the Pentium G630 and faster than a 3870K, just a step above the G620. A 2100 would yield better results. Proof here http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-fx-pentium-apu-benchmark,3120-3.html

did no one notice he has only 1 stick of ram???
Stukav..
1)get a matching stick of RAM and put your comp into dual-channel mode
2)If that's not enough ...go with the i3 2100

Yes, I would get another stick and get dual channel that will improve performance more than a CPU upgrade will.
Geez. Just get that ram and call it a day. that little CPU you got there is a great one for his needs. NO need to get a AMD computer if you already have a socket 1155 board. the FX-4100 isn't a bad CPU it does what it has to do. i agree the Bulldozer isn't what people though but again people expected so much for a company. they can only do what they can. Intel has a lead right now. But I am sure AMD WILL come back soon.thumb.gif

As far as what you were saying about the CPU getting this guy an FX still doesn't make sense considering he'd have to go thru the hassle of changing his mobo. Way easier to drop in an I3 and it would be faster as well. Regardless of whether or not you think he'd notice it. Like I pointed out in the post you quoted his current CPU is faster then a 4100 in gaming already.
As far as your multi-tasking argument it's already been pointed out the CPU is most likely not the culprit of his alt-tab issues. Not only that but throwing cores at the problem isn't going to fix it.

Yes, the GTX 460 is $100 but if you're low-end (Not mid-range which is where the 460 lies) then there is no better solution, even if you count GPU upgrades the HD6670 CFX thing works well.

I'm seriously calling TH out on those Skyrim results, according to them I should be getting sub-30fps (Exact same settings, worse GPU) yet I stick around 37fps minimum. This was pre-patch and without the mod to optimise it as well.

Other than that, and if the 4100 is OCed...?

If that does not yield any significant improvements, I guess I'll move forward with the CPU upgrade. I'll keep you guys posted on the development.

Quoting myself again just in case someone missed it. I really appreciate your inputs guys... Identical RAM stick is on the way and should come in around late this week or early next week. I'll give you the feedback. If no decent improvements, CPU upgrade will follow.

Thanks again for everyone's inputs. smile.gif

As owner of an FX-4100 processor, as well as owning Thuban, Deneb, Propus, Callisto, Agena, Bisbane, San Diego, list goes on and on...

I recommend the...

i3-2100.

My FX-4100, even when overclocked to 4.5GHZ, cannot beat one of my old Phenom II x4's at stock. Link to my review.

I'd recommend Zosma... if this was last January. AMD really dropped the ball on that one by restricting its availability for so long. There's no way I would buy a new 45nm chip. Used -> yes, but only for cheap.

Update : It's been a few days since I've installed my Identical 4gb RAM stick which now runs on Dual Channel.

I seem to notice some changes in fps (increasing on some instances) compared to before but the split-second lag when switching program is still there. I guess I'll have to go the CPU upgrade path next time. I'll update you guys once funds are ready and CPU upgrade is going.

Thanks.

Hey, I might know why you get the split second lag - this happens when you alt-tab out of a game right?
Do the desktop resolution and refresh rate settings match those of the game?
If not then the desktop has to recalibrate to the diff resolution.  If they're the same it's much faster.
