I applaud anyone who brings higher-res monitors to the masses. It's pretty stupid how pixel dimensions determine size.

I'd sure love a retina display. Finally, something that could come close to going pixel to pixel with my DSLR.

Can't you change the mouse pointers yourself?

I think you could but having official support from the OS designer is good. It will be interesting to see how customers react to high DPI screens. Apple has the buying power and marketing to influence tech trends.
Will be an $800+ upgrade for a 15" screen
Wont be able to run ANYTHING useful at that rez (anything that needs to be rendered in 3D)
Extra CPU/GPU power = lower battery life
Will be over-priced as usual

There's your apple hate wink.gif

No, but really, higher DPI / rez is good. Although, as said before, apple will make it cost a TON, and there's still far to many tech issues with the idea in general. I mean, can ANYONE here actually run BF3 at 3840x2160 and get decent FPS? My bet is no, and thats with all the crazy GTX 580 SLI stuff and so on. Apple has at best a 5770 cross-fire setup, making it completely useless at the job. Basically, it'll result in a higher DPI UI. And personally, at 2-3ft from my screen (24", 1920x1200, or 15.1" 1920x1080) I cant see ANY pixelation.

Honestly, just bring on the OLED/AMOLED screens people. We've hit pretty close to the DPI threshold (there is actually limit to which our eyes can see), so now we just have to get the colors and contrast ratio up there (right now its pretty bad).

Since most YouTube videos top out at 1920x1080, won't watching videos on these higher res monitors look bad?

On topic: I wonder if this will spark a high res movement across all platforms (Desktops, TV's, etc.)

Does watching a 720p video on a 1080p screen make it look bad compared to watching it on a native 720p screen?

Answer is no, not really no...

EDIT: I should have said, does it make it look worse, I think they look the same, if not better on a bigger res screen.

As happy as I am to see someone finally push high-res displays in the desktop/laptop market, I vehemently loathe the buzzword bonanza that is Apple. My HTC Rezound has higher PPI than the magical retina screen on the iPhone 4, but they didn't slap a buzzwords all over it and baptize it with holy water.

I wanted to hang onto my 1080p display until the next standard emerged, so this is good.

It's because, most of these so called "haters" actually respond rationally. A lot of apples' so called hate group actually have legit and accurate reasoning behind their claims. Likewise, the mods are doing quite a good work at shutting up these individuals.
