Just bought some DT880 PRO's 250ohms

Went to Guitar Center and picked these up. Was told they are very neutral / flat sounding which I love. What worries me though is they said I don't need a headphone amp to drive these. I'm using the Asus Xonar Essence STX Sound card to power these and I'm not truely sure they drive them completely.

I'm using these strictly for mixing. I also bought a pair of M-Audio BX5 studio monitors so I don't purely mix in headphones but both.

My question is should I be worried about these headphones not being driven correctly? did I get the right pair should I have gotten the 600ohm version?

Your STX has a dedicated headphone amp in it that should run the 250Ω DT880s just fine.

Your Xonar STX has a in-graded headphone amp, so your card do have a amp. Guitar Center is wrong, you would need to plug them thru a headphone amp to drive them. You are fine you have nothing to worry about. Just set the Xonar STX headphone amp settings towards the ohms of the headphones.

The DT880 pro only exist in 250ohm's, they are good headphones, The Premium's are the ones that exist in 32oh,250ohm and 600ohms. From what people mention that the pro and the premium's suppose to have a tad different sound signature between each other.

The main thing is with the DT880 when it comes to amps, its the Synergy with the amp. As it reacts different to different amp, where one amp it does wonders with and then another it doesn't. Even if it supplies enough power for the headphones. Tube amp's is usually suggested for the DT880s but There are solid stage amp's that works great with the DT880's too.

If your up to it I suggest you change the default op-amps that are in the STX I/V dip-8 sockets. From the Default JRCs to 2x LME49720NA's. As just the jrc's op-amps are used when ever the headphone output are used.

The DT880 600Ω is even harder to drive than the 250. I have the 600Ω version and although the Auzentech Forte says it can drive headphones that are 600Ω... I don't think it did it well. I bought a Ray Samuel Audio HR-2 headphone amp and I'm pretty happy with the setup.

I imagine the STX and the 250 ohm version is a pretty good match up though. The STX should drive them pretty well. I would only get the 600 ohm version if you plan to get a separate, somewhat nice dedicated headphone amp. Just my opinion.

admflameberg you said I need to set the ohms with my sound card? how would I do that?

I think I'll keep these 250's i'm pretty happy with them thus far I guess I need to burn them in.

In the Xonar audio Center, main page, with Headphone selected in analogue out, click the little hammer type icon and choose a gain level.
