Budget Upgrade Help

Thread Starter
Hi OCN,
I'm doing a upgrade to an existing system and would like your input.
I have the HDD, GPU's, and Case already and would like to know what the best performance to price ratio for the CPU, RAM, MOBO, and PSU would be.
Budget is $400 lower is better but that would be the limit.
I will be using it in the Sound Booth I manage at my church. We run MediaShout, Audacity, and will be adding livestreaming to the list when this build is done.
The Capture card is not included in this budget so done worry.

I don't expect to be overclocking this system due to the fact I can't have any problems that may arise with overclocking, mainly BSOD's.

Expected components would be,
CPU - 4+ cores
RAM - 16gb
MOBO - 1x PCI slot for the capture card and 2 PCI express slots for the SLI GPU's.

Thanks
Quesenek

  • Phenom II x4 960T - $115 shipped [NCIX]
  • GA-990XA-UD3 - $130 shipped, $120 AR [Newegg]
  • 2x 2x4GB Kingston HyperX DDR3-1600 - $68 shipped for two [NCIX]
  • Rosewill HIVE 650 (more like a 750W) modular PSU - $85 shipped [Newegg] - check the HardwareSecrets review for the OCZ ZS 650W which is exactly the same in internals but nonmodular - it can supply up to 780W safely before shutting down.  Better for price than a Corsair nonmodular PSU and with better quality too!

This is all $398 shipped and $388 after rebate

^ It's a hard deal to pass, sure, but a key problem with that is that the motherboard's crossfire slots are situated as 16x-4x, if I'm not mistaken he is using HD 6970s so there may be more than a 10-20% performance penalty involved here.  I already know going down to x4 already puts a ~4-8% penalty on the 5870.  If that capture card is dual slot, by the way.... he would need a case with 8 PCI slots, that might end up being quite an addition to investment.

I guess I should've considered it, up to you OP.

Thanks for the help.
I forgot to add its not an upgrade to my current rig.
The video cards are a pair of ancient 6600GT's in SLI to run three screens (dual screen's + a projector) the most graphic heavy application we use is Youtube @ 360p so a GPU upgrade really isn't a big deal.

as far as I'm concerned the only reason I'm running a second card is just for the third screen.

I like the x6 phenom II deal however the 1x PCI slots are in the wrong place. I'm planning on using a BlackMagic Intensity pro and that would put it right in the middle of the GPU's.

LOL, 6600GTs.  x4 PCIe link will hardly bottleneck that.  Quick, get the 1055T + M5A97 deal!!! It may be gone by tomorrow evening.

Is there anything wrong with having the Blackmagic Intensity between GPUs?

Actually I don't think the M5A97 has an official SLI label on it as it is 970 chipset.  Although there are (or used to be) unofficial ways of doing it.
