Can someone please tell me how these are taken, and other pictures like them?

Okay, so I have been wondering this for a while now. I find this style of photography really cool and have never really been able to find out much more about it. Can anyone enlighten me on the techniques as well as other photographers that may have this style?

Out of focus, high ISO with a ton of editing?

See, who even knows if it was a digital photograph and not film.

Yea I suppose thats true. But how could it most closely replicated with purely camera work?

Shoot monochrome. Under expose your picture by a stop or 2, and set a stupidly high ISO (6400, or maybe even high ISO expansion setting - This number is camera dependent).

See like, this is a poor example and took a whole of 5 mins but, this is a picture of the stero in my room, under exposed by 2 stops, f/2.2 and ISO of 12,800 (or whatever my H setting is) and run through lightroom. All I did was drop some brightness and destroy the structure in Silver Efex.

I don't know, maybe someone can do better,

Using swindle's image (hope you don't mind) I added Film Grain then added a duplicate layer in Photoshop and applied the Craquelure texture as well as Water Paper textures and adjusted the transparency of the layer. It's not an exact match to the ones you listed, but I don't have a texture available to match it. In other words, it can be done in Photoshop playing around with a black and white photo, film grain, and textures.

You could try emailing Travis Smith, he's the one who's done all of the Opeth cover art for as long as I can remember. If you asked this 5 years ago I could have inquired when we met him at Wacken. http://www.seempieces.com
