Lowest power consumption CPU ?

Thread Starter
Hi everyone

Well, i currently have a Socket 478 Celeron 2.4ghz with 0.75 gb ram server being used as a network gateway running ClearOS.
Its an old config, so I was thinking about buying a new one. Mostly because of the power consumption.

I'm currently between 2 CPUs: Intel G530 and AMD Sempron 145. Both has a very similar price in my country.
Now, my question is: will the power consumption be lower enough to have sense to make this change? And also, which one of those CPUs (with their build) will consume less?

And last question: Any of those 2 cpus (appart from the Power consumption improve) will be a performance improvement, wont they?

Thanks for your time! thumb.gif

Performance improvement will definitely be there (quite huge actually), socket 478 is such an old socket.

In terms of power consumption, Celeron G530 beats Sempron 145. Sempron 145 has no iGPU built inside, so it either uses onboard video or discrete video. Celeron G530 has iGPU built inside the CPU. You can downclock G530 to 1.6 GHz if you are so picky to shave more power off. Personally, my i3-2100 consumes 30 W at full load, so I can't see G530 being more power hungry than that.

probably some sort of atom would use less

out of those two the celeron will use much less power. No northbridge, so it saves a bunch there too.

So, you are saying that my Socket 478 Celeron build will consume LESS power than for example a Sempron 145 Build?
(sorry if my question is stupid, but i have been out of the hardware world for a while)

I was talking about the new celeron the G530 or whatever it is called

the Intel Z68 PCH has a TDP of 9W

The AMD 880G northbridge is at ~18w, and the SB850 southbridge is another 6W, so 24 total.

TDP isn't a perfect measure of actual power consumed, but it gives a rough idea.

some graphs
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/celeron-g540-g440_7.html#sect0

It is really a wash, but the performance/watt is much better with the Celeron.

Power consumption, from the greatest (power hungry) to the least.

Socket 478 > Sempron 145 > Celeron G530 > Intel Atom

i'd say celeronG530..and you can downclock/undervolt it some to use less wattage(at least with the biostar h61mgc)
and i like the celeron g530..so much i sold my p4 backup rig (mostly)
It's snappy!

OH, ok.
Thanks both of you!

Then i will see if i can get an Atom to decrease my power consumption to minimum.

Thanks again!

Can't really say that when the Sempron 150 and the Celeron G540 use the same amount of power at load, and the Sempron uses less at Idle.

But when you factor in NB and iGPU, I think it is safe to say that.
