[engadget] Nikon confirms 36.3 megapixel - Page 2

Ive wondered, is there a ratio between the two? Say for this 36.3 Megapixel camera, does it need a 36.3 megapixel sensor? or larger or smaller?

There are two main sensors used for dSLRs. There is APS-C and Full Frame. APS-C corresponds to a size similar to old APS film, and Full frame sensor to 35mm film. The larger the pixel, the more light can theoretically be absorbed by the receptor site, resulting in higher levels of detail. Cameras with smaller frames and more pixels results in the opposite. Sure, Canon's 18 MP sensor and Nikon's 16 MP sensor are great, but look at Sony's new 24MP APS-C sensor and see what you would rather have. Personally, I wouldn't want over 18 MP without going to a full frame camera. These are much more costly, as the yields on these huge pieces of silicon can't be the greatest considering the millions of pixels that need to function.

Here is a REAL preview from a reputable camera website for more info.

There's really no reason for the majority of professionals to need anything more than 10 megapixel sensor in a camera, really when you think about it the medium broadcasting the picture rarely has a matching resolution to actually show off the original picture. Just look at websites, magazines, books and so on. Really all you need is enough pixels to be able to work with.

This 3000$ nikon is for enthusiasts and people with money to kill.

Tell me when they put this sensor into affordable 4k video cameras.

Moar coars moar megapixals! If you out resolve the lens what is the point?

I am invested in Canon (not that I cant appreciate Nikon), just give me a FF 12mp with a good AF and 8 FPS.

Most consumers equate megapixels to good.

Old school Pentax SLR (No D) for lulz still.

Have a Pentax DSLR here. Probably wouldn't trade it in for any of the competing systems as I just need the image shooting and don't do video. Legacy lenses are just nice! Just got a 100mm 1:1 manual focus macro for $85 the other day.

holy crap, 100% viewfinder! i'm definitely getting one.

ps: 36mp on an FF is almost the same pixel size as the 7D's 18mp aps-c so i don't think noise will be an issue at all.

I swear megapixels only matters depending on how big you make the picture e.g. a 1.3m and a 5m picture would look the same if the picture was the size of a postage stamp. I'm pretty sure this is just a buzzword seller. A bit like selling a dual core laptop with 8gbs of ram.

This is totally inaccurate. Many stock photography websites demand large file sizes, and larger files usually = more money. Professionals that don't shoot in demanding low light conditions (such as sports) will benefit greatly from this (ex. product, landscape photography). In addition, those that are considering medium format but are put off by the cost (and other issues) will find this as an alternative that is nearly as good.

With a sensor that size you will start to rival old medium format cameras which is why this is such a big deal. The dynamic range and depth of field should make this camera very very popular among the studio and landscape crowd. Most people complaining about pixel size are just picking it as a reason to hate. If the ISO doesnt really diminish (Which they have stated is similar to the D700), then why cant it have 36 MP? If you want a faster camera then you can get the D4 or pick up a D700/D3s depending on price range.
