Inquiriy and Search for Opinions on PSU Purchase

Hello all. I would like to hear your opinions on what a good PSU would be for my system. I have read various guides and what to look for but I am looking for a final say.

My system will go like this

Core 2 Duo e6300
Gigabyte DS3 Motherboard
ATI X1900XT 512MB
250GB SATA HDD
Creative Xi-Fi Xtrememusic
2x512MB Mushkin DDR2-667 RAM

I plan to overclock the CPU as much as possible so searching for a good PSU is crucial. I am in Canada so NCIX will be my main source, and if another e-tailer has the same PSU for a cheaper price I can always price match.

The PSU I have in mind right now is the Seasonic S12-500W Unit. I know about its efficiency, low noise level and reliability but the amperage looks kind of low for a overclocked CPU. Or ar my doubts false? What are your takes? And what are your suggestions? I do not have bottomless pockets so keep that in mind.

Your current PSU has two 12V rails of 17A and 16A, and delivers a max total load of 33A. Here is an estimate of the power draw on the 12V rails per item:

Core 2 Duo e6300: 5.42A stock, ~12.5A when overclocked, depending on how hard you pusy it.
Gigabyte DS3 Motherboard - 2A or so
ATI X1900XT 512MB - Up to 10.5A stock, a bit more when overclocked.
250GB SATA HDD - 1A
Creative Xi-Fi Xtrememusic - 1A
2x512MB Mushkin DDR2-667 RAM - 1A

Totalling 28A. Add a couple for optical, and some other, and you'll end up at 30A. It seems to me that your current PSU should be up to the task.

Now, I don't know exactly how the rails are divided on that PSU... assuming that the first rail is PSU only, and the second rail everything else, you should have enough for that CPU. The second rail might get a bit much to handle.

Maybe one of those GPU only PSUs might help you out?

the Seasonic S12-500 is a great psu, but why not get the S12-600? Then you'll never have to wonder

There is only a difference of 3A on the 12V rails between the S-12 500W and the S-12 600W. Not worth spending that much money on.

If you plan to spend on a new PSU (and I do assume your current one will still have some resell value), the best choice is this one:
PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610 EPS12V EPS12V 610W $159.99

Expensive, yes. But heaps of power with 49A on a single 12V rail. That should definately give you enough headroom, and likely even be enough for a (single!) high-end DX10 cards, with are rumored to draw like 250W (or over 20A)

Decisions Decisions. A power supply is supposed to be a long term investment so the extra $50 will be worth it over the years no? However, I am in Canada so I guess I will have to look for something not obscenely priced. Damn Canada and her tariffs and taxes and then more taxes.

Would this be an idea, in addition to your existing PSU?

My current PSU, the Antec PSU that came with the Sonata II Case pulls, if I remember correctly, 17 on the 12V Rail(s).

I would rather and actually have to buy a new PSU because the computer currently in my possesion minus the X1900XT and Creative Xi-Fi, will be sold to my father who needs a new computer (Heh, he's been putting up with an old 500mhz Celeron from 2000!). So I will have to buy a new PSU. Unless anyone has any objections I think I will have to go with the Seasonic S12-500W/600W (Haven't truly decided which model to get). That PC Power and Cooling one you linked to Chozart looked mighty fine but I cannot seem to find it at Canadian e-tailers.

Duh.. I was thinking about that one next to the Seasonic 500W.

Take a look at the OCZ GameXStream also. Great PSUs. I have the FSP Epsilon 700W myself, which is identical to the GameXStream. The 600W version has 44A on the 12V rails, while the 700W has 50A on the 12V rails:

Heh. Thank you Chozart for your suggestions. I've decided I will get the Seasonic S12-500W. And oh yeah, maybe you should change the title that is under your name to be more Intel-oriented now since you have a e6600 eh?
