HD 7970 + CrossFireX + Dual Monitors

Hi guys!

This is my first post ever on OCN!!! Such an awesome site. lol.
Anyways, I have a few questions regarding video cards.
I just built my first EVER gaming rig!!!
So I am a complete newbie but I am learning a lot in the process.

I am posting this because I couldn't find the answer anywhere.

First, are graphic cards usually this loud? lol.
I am HD 7970 in crossfire and they are LOUD!!!

And when they say the TOP GPU, do they mean physically on top of another?
Because people say that the bottom GPU gets hotter but I would think that the top one would be hotter since hot air dissipates upwards and the top GPU (stock cooler) is sucking all the hot air from the bottom GPU as opposed to the bottom GPU which is getting cool air from the bottom of the case. Maybe they are talking about non-reference cards where the fans blow air into the case rather than out of the case?

Also is it normal for only one GPU to connect/work with the monitor? I tried connecting to the bottom GPU and the monitor doesn't work.

I am also getting lower than expected FPS in games. I would think that HD 7970 x 2 would be able to get at least 80FPS in most games but I am getting 50 FPS in AION (a MMORPG that's like 4 years old in 1920x1200). Maybe it's compatibility issue?

How can I be sure that both GPUs are working and that the game is utilizing crossfire correctly?

Is there a way to make GPU-Z show both GPU temps at once? Or are there programs that do it? MSI Afterburner also only shows temp for 1 GPU. I tried opening two separate GPU-Z but one doesn't show anything.

Finally, my main question is...

First, when I am using my crossfire setup to use 2 monitors, do I connect them to each GPU?
or do I use an adapter to connect both monitors to the top/main GPU?

Is eyefinity REQUIRED for dual monitor setup?

The thing is that I am NOT looking to play games with both monitors. I have a rather large monitor and would prefer to play games on just one of them. I would like to keep the other monitor on though, so I can watch movies/documents while I am gaming.
So what kind of setup would I need to do just that?

Or is it possible to use my gaming monitor with the 7970's and connect my side monitor to the onboard VGA?

In summary, I would like to play games on my main monitor with the performance of a crossfire setup while using my side monitor (during gaming) to do extra stuff.

Is that even possible?

I am sorry that the post is long but any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

THANKS!!!

Do you have crossfire enabled? I don't own any ATI cards but from what you're saying it sounds like 1 of yours cards isn't doing anything..

My 470s give me 100+fps in Aion. You should be seeing the same (better even) with your crossfire setup.
