Argh. I can't believe I just missed this. Oh well. I guess I'll just wait around for the next sale. I want to try it, but I'm not going to pay $40 to do so.

Just bought one a couple days ago for $24.99.

I haven't used it yet, as my PC is currently out of order.

Little off topic but whats the best tracking speed on the CM Spawn nowadays? Is it still best on 125hz as well?

Yes it is and firmware 30a (with high LOD) gives you the best speed and tracking.

Any change will make make you worse in the short term, took me 2 weeks before I could play comfortably. However I own both the spawn, and the xornet, and despite it maybe being my favorite mouse shape ever, I wouldn't recommend either of them. I will definitely be trying the newer firmwares though, and will post if I see any improvement.

Can you elaborate why? Might give this mouse if it goes on sale again

Well it's my opinion but:

Spawn
=========
+Feels sturdy
+Quality tactical scrollwheel
+Better paint job
-Default firmware LOD too high
-Other firmwares have tracking problems
-800DPI broke
-Cable too stiff
-Feet are square, so catch
-Low max speed
-500/1000hz broke

Xornet
=========
+Feet are rounded, thus better
+Wire less stiff
+Will hit high max speeds in certain conditions
~Tracking issues? Differences of opinion here.
-Fail LOD, different firmwares YMMV
-Feels flimsy, too light.
-Scrollwheel too scrollable
-Isn't as nice looking, but who cares
-Default firmware LOD too high
-Allegedly has prediction / angle snapping

BOTH
=========
+Awesome shape
+Cheap
+Large quality feet (xornet is better tho)
-Surface Dependant
-Arrows on sidebuttons are retarded and hurt my fingers after hours of playing

As Skylit suggests, you will be able to mitigate/avoid these problems depending on your play style:
  • If you don't mind playing at 1800/250 without ever lifting the mouse, and don't move it very fast, then maybe the spawn is good enough.
  • The xornet just doesn't feel amazing, probably because of the angle snapping, but it's the one I'm currently using (not the one I'd prefer to use).

On another note, there have been promises of future upgrades and potential fixes. The spawns new firmware was supposed to come in January, as far as I know, but the CM rep is awfully silent about that. I'm waiting punatiently. Hell I'd probably even buy another if I could get one that "just works" without my gripes but I'm not consider that CM wont give up on it.

Skylit does seem to know what he's talking about, so if he says the hardware is good, then thats grand. Hardware is worthless until we get the software though.

I believe newer Spawns have similar feet to the Xornet. (Amazon has older stock)

Yeah, the hardware is very good compared to other competing mice. Sad to see a great mouse being bottlenecked by firmware, but I suppose it happens a lot in this market.
