But what about people running overclocked vs. stock? Your initial idea would be the closest to solving the problem, but that is a lot of extra strain on the networks.

I think just a one time benchmark, rather than for every WU. Or even just start with weak easy SMP WUs and then based on how quick you turn those in it uses that as a benchmark to determine what you could handle for your next WU.

It could be built in to the core, so only when they update the cores would you get the new benchmark is what I was thinking.

This could work, but you would lose a day or so just to the initial "crappy learner" units. And you would have to have some sort of unique idea for each client install since you can't base it off passkey, IP, or even system specs. That way it can track that you've been able to do certain WU's on a specific rig. But then if you change your overclock or another component, it would have to reset and you would either have to restart again, or just drop down a couple WU's.

Its definitely more complicated then you would think, I'm sure that's why they stuck with the simple number of cores limitation which worked fine for a while, but now it's no longer accurate (SB-E vs. BD)

Grand Pa the new Big-16 are about as big as 6903, but have a preferred deadline of just 2.4 days. about 35 TPF mins. that leaves out even 24 threaded processors... I guess they used 16 Real cores and Intel ones at that when they designed this new Wu. so much for 16. when real AMD 16 cores can´t make the deadline. heck I´d be surprice that slow 32(interlagos) cores will do it.
