installed win 7 home premium from cd back onto laptop hdd, it loads but doesn't load any of the laptop specific hardware, settings, anything. to back up, as part of that install process it did keep the old win 7 pro on the hdd, renamed the directory 'windows.old'. thought i'd be clever and, booted into ubuntu, renamed the new win 7 home to 'windows.new', renamed the old win 7 pro that was in 'windows.old' to 'windows' and rebooted, it goes all the way into logging into win 7 pro and then hangs with a blue screen (not the blue screen of death, i know that one) after it stated it was 'preparing desktop'.

too much time on all this S#*$# is wearing me down so i'm resigning myself to working with win 7 home that is working but has to have all the drivers, devices, everything apparently setup by hand, then reinstall all the programs, then bring back all my data.

learned the hardway here: always create your system recovery disks immediately upon getting a new computer that has such a thing (assuming that such disks would have reinstalled/repaired win 7 pro properly and i wouldn't have this win 7 home difference issues); and never trust that an OS that claims it will setup alongside won't in the process hose your original OS

final, and finally, good news update. my clever lil workaround of renaming the windows.old (pro) and windows (home) installs actually worked once i realized there was more to folders than just one. now, good old win 7 pro is working again, all files intact, all programs intact, back to where i was two days ago with just needing to figure how to get the *$#%*$%( photos and music off the ext3 drive hooked in via my usb cradle...

still, any help appreciated if anyone is out there...
