Only thing I can think of is that they are getting warped around the socket, and thus losing connectivity to the pins or something. Definately was not from cold/moisture, they died slowly.

Possibley. Go over your layers of insulation for me.
Also, I know you probbly already knwo this but, a good mount it key, but you only have to be flush, tight is not really that necssacery.
I only mention that becaue I messed a board a little by over tighting.

Could be. It's hard to diagnose with some much stuff around the socket. Maybe if you have enough TIM do a few practice mounts and see how it spreads and what gives you the best mount.
