My Intel 531

Thread Starter
I am curious how far I can safely bring my Intel Pentium 4 531 3.0GHz Prescott (Socket 775) with a Zaleman 7000 cooler...idle temps 46-49; load temps 53-58 at stock speeds(bad I know)

I have only ever clocked it to 3225mhz (215x15)

I could only get my 540 upto 237x16, so try a 237. Also watch for those idle temps, yours seem to be a little too high.

Did you use AS5 or the paste that was included with your Zalman?

Well my bros got a prescott socket 775 pentium 4, 3 ghz stock speed, and he got his to 3.75 and had to stop cause it was gettin to hot, and when he did get that far it was at around 55-60 degree mark i think, but if urs is 53-58, id say just leave it stock unfortunatly .

Yeah I used AS5, no way I'm gunna wipe that Miricle Whip that comes with the cooler on my CPU...but I have noticed the ends of the fins on my Zaleman only ever get warm...The fan is 100% constant, CPU in bios may read like 50, but if I shut down and put my hand on the cooler it is just warm, def. nowhere near 50...more like 30.

Would cleaning the base of the cooler + the IHS and lapping on some new AS5 make a noticable difference? (noticable being anything more than a 5c drop)

You definitly need to fix your cooling issue my same P4 doesnt pass 53C-55C at full load with Photoshop/AIM/Ares/5 torrents d/lin and 2 Prime 95's running to make sure my 3.8Ghz is stable.

My 531/socket 775 Prescott 3.0 is OC'ed right now to 3.8Ghz with a lil more room for play if I figure out a few more issues(I just learned thorough OC'ing last night), its aircooled as well with a 80CFM Kingwin Cyclone 4200RPM at only 3000RPM with Quiet-Fan on with my MOBO, if I leave it at 4200RPM it'll rarely touch 50C at load.

How fast can 3.8 on this chip run 1m of SuperPI? if I remember right...stock does it in about 41 seconds

Would polishing the heatsink and IHS for several hours be worth the trouble to me? It seems like the heatsink I am using should be cooling a little better than it currently is...

I just did it with a result of 35sec(screenshot included) running Prime 95 and a few other programs but I doubt that would affect it much, I dont have any experience in polishing the heatsink. I'd try it if I were you tho cause your temps are definitly on the hot side, right now im at 39C-42C with a mix of usage.
