Lightroom is incredible software, but its not cheap.

Definitley worth it if you will be doing a lot of work though.

Lightroom is only like 80 bucks if you're a student, and the Lightroom 4 Beta is free to download.

Too heavy on the saturation and contrast there, buddy.

Paint.Net - free, easy to use, but missing many awesome Photoshop features. e.g., healing tool

Gimp - free, very powerful, and perhaps the world's most convoluted UI.

Lightroom - easier to use than Photoshop, optimized for photo retouching, and available for a decent student/teacher edition price.

Photoshop - nuff said...moderate student/teacher edition price.

I use all of the above routinely except Gimp. I'm very thankful for Student pricing...and that we have a student in the house who likes to use them...or I would be stuck using Gimp again. wink.gif

Lightroom ftw.

Photoshop is just way to much for my liking and needs.

Lightroom is king, but you might want to check out Corel Aftershot for a cheaper alternative. It is still new (even though it's basically a rebranded Bibble Pro). However, it's the only game in town that runs native on Linux and it is very fast and efficient. It really makes full use of multiple cores. There are some features I miss from Lightroom, but keeping my entire workflow on Linux and exporting in a fraction of the time is appealing smile.gif It's something to watch for sure.

BTW you should shoot in RAW with that 7D if you are going to be editing smile.gif

It's always going to be a subjective question. who decides what is user friendly? I find that Photoshop is second-nature to use for me but I've been using it since 1992.
It all depends upon what your needs are. If it's basic photo-editing then just pick something off the free shelf. they all do as much as each other.
If you want serious editing ability then you need to be shooting in raw and using both photoshop and lightroom to get the best out of your images. Either way raw is the key.
If you fin'd photoshop difficult to use then lightroom will come no easier.

I don't know if Gimp has raw compatibility but i personally find that more counter-intuitive than photoshop to use. however it is powerful for a free program if you need all those features and are prepared to learn how to use it.

If you have photoshop already with the adobe raw plugin then there is no point in buying lightroom yet as your photoshop can do all the same things if you learn how to use it.

I can't speak for the bespoke Canon software but out of the box Nikon View NX2, Capture NX 2 and capture control 2 do most of what i need but I still use photoshop because that's what i'm used to.

I'm on Photoshop CS6 Extended superstition release right now. Christ I'm old.
