Need to buy ram. what is the best kind to buy? - Page 2

Why would you pay $40 shipped for a generic DDR3-1333 CL9 kit :|
Even on Newegg there are lower cost DDR3-1600 kits, MUCH better; a huge step up.  That NCIX kit will probably end up cheaper though it doesn't ship free but it's still better than the generic Ripjaws kit you had originally chosen.

Pick some out for him then. Maybe some corsair vengeance 1600. And hes going to be gaming, so I don't see a need for anything lower than cl9

1333 to 1600 is unnoticeable in real world usage.

Any of the name brand RAM from 1333 MHz. up that comes with a Lifetime warranty should serve the OP well. There is no benefit in paying more for faster than 1600 MHz. or low latencies RAM as they show no tangible performance gain with DDR3 RAM.

OP, you will be more than happy with what you picked out. Dont go for the epeen and get cl8, you are not going to notice anything in games, lol.

neither will you with 1600 from 1333.

What he picked out is a RIP OFF. The Samsung 30nm IC kit is a huge step up in speed flexibility and also offers lower power consumption for the same price. Other DDR3 1600 kits with diff ICs can still be had for less than the cost of the generic Ripjaws kit. No one should be paying more than the minimal cost for a generic 1333 cl9 kit because OC expectations should be the same throughout all generic kits: none, due to low binning likeihood.

If your mouse isn't double posting... as mine was, lay off the caffeine! wink.gif

As far as brand name RAM of the same frequency and latency, they all perform the same. As far as if one model DIMM is better than another for OC'ing is open to debate because it depends on three factors:

YOUR CPU/Mobo/RAM

There's no magic in any of this DDR3 RAM stuff. Just buy a reasonable priced RAM kit that meets your needs. If you want to play around with OC'ing it go right ahead. It won't make any substantial diff in how fast your apps run however.
