If you install Windows, it will perform better than your laptop. However, it isn't a laptop, and the performance of a 6970m on a "desktop" machine just isn't there for gaming. I don't think you'd be able to use the full resolution for any modern games.

I'm no Mac expert, but I think newer iMacs can be used as an external display but only with Thunderbolt. I don't what kind of compatibility Thunderbolt has, it might only work with other Thunderbolt devices (i.e. Macs). Also, if you go that route, you essentially have a $2k monitor, and a bad one at that.

If you think it's worth the effort, I'd trade your friend and sell the iMac. But then again if I was your friend, I'd sell the iMac myself, or return it. For 2 grand, you can put together a pretty nice laptop with the same performance as the iMac, if not better. You could also build yourself a rig to blow all iMacs out of the water.

Oh, and $500 for that laptop is a steal, even if it didn't have Windows. I wish I was that lucky tongue.gif

Not for gaming...and certainly not with only 1 GB of vram. The 2 GB version might be better, but the card itself isn't fast enough.

Why not do the trade, then sell the iMac on ebay for a better gaming laptop? You both win, just that you win more. smile.gif

I couldn't tell you for sure but either way I wouldn't just use the monitor as it would be a waste of very nice hardware. If you were going to just use the monitor then sell the iMac and buy a 27" Thunderbolt Display or similar high end IPS display and pocket the profit.

MacBook Pros can be crazy expensive for the hardware they have but the iMac isn't a bad buy which has a lot to do with the awesome 27" IPS display it comes with.

It's definitely possible you could love the iMac. At one time, I was not an Apple hater but I didn't see the point in buying their high priced products. I had never bought an Apple product in my life until I used an Apple Wired Aluminum Keyboard at school and loved so I bought one. Then I bought a MacBook Air and it's the most incredible laptop I've ever used.

I disagree, an HD6970M can game just fine at that resolution. It might not be able to max out every game such as newer titles like Battlefield 3 but with lower quality settings it can game very nicely with that card. I have an HD6850 1GB desktop card which has very similar specs to the HD6970M. With my Dell 30" 2560x1600 display I can play games very smoothly. GTA4 can push it pretty hard but with slightly lower settings it plays great at native resolution and looks awesome.

the amount of stream possessiveness, ram, and **** doesnt count for all the card's speed.

Yes I understand that. For being the best the Imac offers, the 6970M 2 gb is okay. Obviously won't get near as close to what some people are able to do here on OCN. thumb.gif
