Vanilla Skyrim is terrible IMHO, hardly PC-worthy. Fully modded it is truly stunning and possible about as good as it gets from a visual perspective.
CoD, like someone else stated, shouldn't be mentioned at all really in this thread. They mock up their aging engine with better textures and mapping, that's about it.
Assassins creed is one blurfest that has nothing special about it. Being amazed by lightning effects and shadows is so 90's wink.gif

BF3 is ... well, it's certainly a good-looking game but I feel they overdid a lot of things. The animations, lightning effects, HD destruction in the CQ DLC, the explosion of a jet that crashes into a lamp post etc. are very well done. But when you played BFBC2 then it sometimes feels like they took a step back in some areas. I can still remember when I first saw a helicopter spinning towards the ground after it had been shot, that was quite epic. Some destruction in BFBC2 was done better as well (it was easier to shoot a hole through a concrete wall and use it as cover, kind of miss that in BF3 (well, you can in CQ), not even going to rant about the fact how hard it is to destroy a wall in BF3 with C4...).
But they went overboard with the sun glare and the dust TBH and those goddamn colours, I'll never understand why they had to make it so bland and blue at times.

Metro 2033 had decent graphics but they hid a lot of "dirty" stuff with the dark atmosphere and the performance is terrible in comparison to the graphical fidelity.

I think the total war series deserves an honourable mention here though. It might not look the best but CA did a great job IMHO making the game run great on not top-of-the-line hardware.

The first Assassin's Creed? You must be joking. As much as I love the game, visuals were never it's strength. The engine is just primitive, and it has some of the worst shadows and foliage I've seen. And Altair himself looks like he's from a completely different game, because his detail and physics are so much better than everyone else's. He looks out of place in his environment.

I don't have any of the subsequent games of that series, but from watching a lot of HD gameplay of Revelations and Brotherhood, it looks like the games are still being held back by a shoddy, console oriented engine.

You could try grand theft auto 4 with enb/icehancer. It can be very demanding. There is a config tool out aswell http://icelaglace.com/.

Im horrible at judging art direction, or even making my mind up on it, so I'll go by technical (i.e. tech features, stats, things we can measure).
1. Crysis 2
- As much as I hate to say it, CE3 has the best tech out right now. Unlike BF3, it actually USES the tech to its advantage, and does so quite well. I honestly never noticed tessellation even once in BF3.
2. Metro 2033
- The 4A engine is impressive. Its a bit older than CE3, so lacks radiosity and so on, but it makes up for it elsewhere. While the art department really let it down in the outdoor environments, its indoor scenes are amazing.
3. Battlefield 3
- Its a solid game. It looks good, offers a fair bit of tech, but fails to use it well. While tech is great and all, its only useful if its actually used.
4. STALKER Call of Pripyat
- Again, its a solid engine, with a very solid game on top of it. While it misses a ton in some areas (i.e. proper use of tessellation) it makes up for it elsewhere (particles, AI, lighting).

5. Crysis (with mods)
- This had to be on the list. It looks good by itself, and with mods its does look better than anything on this list. If it were somehow ported in its entirety to CE 3.4, it would be easily the best looking game. However, its basically stuck with DX9 (DX10 REALLY didn't add anything)
.

What mods would you recommend to use?
I'd also like to give a nod to the total war series, medievil 2 and shogun 2 in particular had/have some pretty impressive visuals, especially medievil 2 for its time.

Depends on what you're going for. In general, I would say get the ' Cry-Styves' shaders, the HD texture pack, the "Reli-2" ToD, the Xigmatek Xtreme particle mod, and then put CCC 2.21 config on it. There's a thread somewhere here on OCN about this stuff. Personally, I'm not a fan of how that ends out (a bit blrury and washed out), but it does work.

Since this thread has been revived... the technical best is either Crysis/Crysis Warhead or Crysis 2 (I haven't played Crysis 2 to determine).

If we go into MMOs I'm voting Guild Wars 2. It's DX9 (would've been better if it was DX11) and still gives phenominal visuals for and mmo.

It's a great looking game, textures are not what makes a game good looking or not to me. Take RAGE for eg. Sorry but i don't agree with you atall.
